It's funny how your almost never born atheist, you become atheist. I personally think the whole religion thing is far fetched. Why cant we just be dead after we die? Why does there HAVE to be an afterlife? Dont get me wrong i respect others decisions, I just don't believe in it, who's with me? I'm going to be some grass fertilizer one day And home to some maggots + worms.
Not too long at all and I think it makes sense. I was religious when I was a young child but as I got older I kinda realized that it's all a too far fetched.
This is quite general: I have to say, first of all what makes your religion the right religion, why didn't the greeks get it right, aztecs, the only thing that defines what religion you become is where your born and who your parents are and whether your religion caught on. I believe humans created religion becuase we grew more intelligent yet had no explanation to the creation of the universe so this makes logical sense. However we now have a sort of understanding of how the universe is created so surely we no longer need religion especially due to the number of flaws uncovered the scriptures such as the bible, torah etc. Next the reason why children are more likely to be religious is, ok put yourself into the mind of a child. Children are really curious and may wish to know how we came to be, think of the ease of telling them that a mythical being that looks just like you created you and the world then try and explain the scientific explanation. The child will inevitably go for the exciting story about god and a childs mind is so succeptible so the reason I believe many people are still religious is due to indoctrination as a child so you wouldn't know what else to think. I know this is a bit long, tried to keep it short have many more points. If you endured through all if it I hope you enjoyed it and give yourselves a pat on the back.
On top of this, your name is halirious indirectly related top this topic.

I was raised as a Christian, and this is not my experience at all. For as long as I can remember my parents would take me to church, talk to me about the bible, put me in Sunday School, etc. I simply accepted what they told me because they had told me other things before like why the sky is blue or why there's wind, and nothing had ever conflicted with that information. But then comes the whole bible stories, and everyone in church asserting that they are true, when it conflicts left and right with so much, and whenever I asked the only two answer I EVER got were, "Only god knows why" and "That's just how it is." So pretty much by 7-8 years old I was under the impression that no one in church knew anything because they couldn't answer a single question about something very simple. Which led to fights with my parents about not wanting to go to church, youth group, etc.

I hope you stood your ground. Also, congratulations on keeping a great perspective mate, because much of the time it is that "The way it is" goes for any other person.
Kids are naturally drawn to science, because it is simpler cooler. To a child, the idea of mixing an acid (HCl, hydrocholiric acid) and a base (NaOH, AKA drainer cleaner) and having it form salt water (H2O + NaCl) is mind blowing. And to them, finding out that it's not magic and that they themselves can do it, holds more appeal then an adult saying "God did it." To young ears, that sounds like a cop out.
Err... Kind of. Science is never put that way though, since there is work involved. Really, having that is incredibly cool, the fact that you could make life, is also, incredibly cool (Clone sheep anyone?). Whilst not entirely ethical the fact this is possible through ONLY Science (because not everyone is God) is very appealing.
Jews, Muslims and Christians all worship the exact same deity.
That is a completely ignorant statement. Just because all are monotheistic religions, that does not mean it's the same god. While Jews and Christians believe in the same God( to some extents), Muslims believe in a different god altogether.
E1337, you are stretching the term ignorant. You going into all of the technicalities, while mysteriousmexican is giving you the generalities.
Sure they follow part of the same book, but the main problem that people have with the bible is that it is self interpreted. So two religions can follow part of the same book, but they can have a completely different interpretation of God.
And it's definitely Qur'an. Not Koran. And like I said before, it contains similarities, but a Muslim isn't going to walk up to a Jew and call him brother because they have similarities.
Key word in your post, Old Testament. As in the past, they all have different ideas about what is to happen, and how to save their salvation, etc, etc.
To you it is the same God, but why should you know because you don't even believe in one. Someone who believes in the Christian God told you it isn't the same, and he is in the religion. I think he would know more about it than you would.
I think historically it is the same god, but different cults diverged over time and now everyone claims to worship their own god. The way I see it, for someone who looks at how religions arise and develop, it is indeed the same god; while for a believer it is not the same. I dare to say that not even two christians of the same family worship the same god; everyone worships his/her own god following some guidelines, but everyone has a different, very personal image of their god.
Post a link or something to back that up. And that makes no sense. I'm sorry, but maybe they know what is to be considered facts about some religions, but if you haven't actually believed in a religion, you don't really have a clue.
I'm sure Mage will provide us with thousands of links as possible, so I won't even bother doing that :P

So basically, he's saying that Atheists in general have more knowledge about what is in the bible, how they relate to other religions, etc. Which leads to an interesting point, seeing as those who know the most about a certain subject do not believe in it (on average) and those who are not as aware do believe in it. You don't have to believe in Evolution to know the theory, you don't even have to "believe" that the sun is even real, but you can know about it. Belief has nothing to do with how much you know, it's a by product because you believe in it because you know what it is, and think that is more reasonable than any other alternative.
Examined, but you haven't really believed in anything the way a 'true believer' would. And yes, you can have more knowledge, but just because you know more about it doesn't mean that you know more about the belief, about how it feels to believe in something like that. I'm still with HahiHa, when he says people have their own image of their own God.

Actually I was going to put up this image and mention the study as well, but the second part I see is already done. Yes they are all based on the same God, Allah is just God in another language.
