I grew up atheist for 16 years. I had always kept an open mind towards religion, but never really felt a need to believe in it. My sister started going to a Wednesday night children's program at a church. Eventually, I was dragged into a Christmas Eve service. Scoffing, I reluctantly went, assuming that this was going to be a load of crap, but when I went, I felt something. Something that I've never felt before. I felt a sense of empowerment and a sense of calling. Jesus called upon my soul, just like he did with his disciples. he wanted me to follow him. Now, my life is being lived for Christ. He died on the cross for my sins, and the sins of everyone who believes in him. He was beaten, brutalized, struck with a whip 39 times, made to carry a cross up to the stage of his death. This I believe to be true, and I can never repay him for what he has done. I still have my struggles with Christianity, but I've found this bit of information most useful. Religion is not comprehensible in the human mind, because we cannot comprehend the idea of a perfect and supreme being, a God, but we can believe it in our heart, and that's the idea of faith. Faith is, even though everything rides against me believing in Jesus, I still believe in him because I know that it's true in my heart. I invite my fellow Brothers and sisters of the LORD to talk about how Jesus has helped you in your life. No atheists and no insults please
I disagree with a large majority of the bible. Scientific proof reveals on a daily basis that the Earth and the Universe are over 6000 years old, google carbon dating. Dinosaurs were not stuck in the soil by Satan to waver our faiths, they're there because of mass extinction. The banana wasn't crafted by a all knowing and wise god to perfectly fit the human hand, and people shouldn't trade the liberties of life for the security of "I get eternal happiness when I'm dead".

So much Win.
The way I see the whole creationism thing: The Big Something put everything here, and then just let stuff go. Room for the evolutionists and the creationists!

Can we change that to 4.5 billion years old... Cause it is. Article
All you need is common sense and a bit of human compassion to realize religion is gibberish and brutal, and it's main fuel is fear. Too lazy to elaborate further, unless somebody debates with le me.

I wouldn't say that it's main fuel is fear, what of Buddhism, Daoism, Hinduism? No fear, just existence and rebirth. Sounds pretty laid-back and relaxed to me, far from gibberish and brutal. It's a lifestyle choice that, unfortunately, has been used to corrupt in the past.
Can we change that to 4.5 billion years old... Cause it is
Last time I checked 4.5 billion fell into the category under "Over 6,000 years old". The point Annihalation was trying to get across is that the Bible's stories bring the illusion that the Earth is only 6,000 years old.
Now, it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mind-bogglingly useful could have evolved purely by chance that some have chosen to see it as the final proof of the NON-existence of God. The argument goes something like this:
"I refuse to prove that I exist," says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."
"But," says Man, "the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves that You exist, and so therefore, by Your own arguments, You don't. QED"
"Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.
"Oh, that was easy," says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing.
First to find source gets whatever they want......food wise. The source isn't very good but it makes sense if you think about it for a second.
Scholars have concluded that there is no evidence against the Bible.
And yet, people do not believe in the bible. Ah well. It's there choice not mine. Maybe they'll change there mind someday, but for now we'll just keep on saying "Jesus is the only way."
People with common sense have concluded that there is no evidence supporting the Bible's validity.
Yes, I said common sense -- I even LACK common sense and could see that there is no evidence supporting its validity. Logic states that there's no point in me trying to prove you wrong if you can't prove yourself the least bit right at the start.
Thanks for bumping this thread though -- I suppose I'll go onto the next subject which would be- like smokers (from experience, please do not take that as a generalization), some religious people seem very -- VERY defensive and almost for the same reasons.
It's their right -- correct. They can believe what they please -- correct. It doesn't affect us -- in most cases where you hear this argument, this is pretty accurate (in terms of Christianity / other religions).
They don't quite seem to hit a direct reason that relates solely to what they believe. I have the right to believe that my retainer will eat me at night if I don't wear it but any actions I take to deal with that part of the situation alone would make me be seen as a lunatic, no?
So, "just because" you can believe in God, his son and the idea that the world is 6,000 years old (which, hey macfan1, we've proven otherwise) doesn't mean you're not liable for judgement and validity.
Aside from that, homosexuality, abiogenesis, evolution, the big bang, the miracle of Fatima and the "Jesus on Toast" picture have all been included in this thread previously. . . -Can we please get this thread stickied already?
Scholars have concluded that there is no evidence against the Bible.
1) This is simply not true. There is evidence against the Bible within the Bible if you consider logical fallacies/contradictions as evidence against (Which I do, since it's claiming to be the word of an infallible god.)
2) Sources?
3) No evidence against does not make a reason for.
Hmm... I guess all those discoveries of lost relics were untrue then. I suppose we should tell the archeoligests that their attempts to find the relics using the bible was all for not.
