"Ivan's War" by Catherine Merridale. It's an amazing book about what the Soviet soldiers went through in World War II. The conditions were horrifying and disgusting. But the Russians were able to push through and defeat the Germans in the end. Merridale interviewed over 200 veterans for the book, and had first access to recently opened Soviet documents. She is such a great writer too. I highly recommend this to anyone who has even a remote interest in World War II or Russian History.
How can nobody here have mentioned Clive Cussler? He is the author of my second favorite book, Sahara. But my favorite book is written by Koushun Takami and is called Battle Royale, but most people have not heard of it.
I read Ivan's War almost 2 years ago, and still remember most of it. It is a very well written book, I just remember it being more based on what the soldiers went through and the conditions they had to put up with.
When I first started reading it, I was expecting to get more from actual battles during the war, which was the only let down. Now you got me thinking about it, and I might just pick it up soon and start reading it again.
