I created this thread for anyone that is interested in discussing mathematics. I don't think that this thread is a [dup] and if it is, it was not intended to be one.
The first thing I will say is that I know the value of:
e to 12 digits: 2.718281828459
pi to 25 digits: 3.1415926535897932384626433
I hope that this thread will be a successful one.

irrational numbers cant be expressed as a fraction... 1/3 is rational and it goes on forever

Can anyone solve the following equation:

logx=100

What I mean is:

The common log of x is 100.

logx=100 when 10^100=x i dont know what 10^100 is though

There's no antilog. The answer to logx=100 is x=googol.

That is correct. Also, 10^googol is a googolplex.

log^-1 is the inverse of log... which would be 10^100
log base a of b=c when a^c=b
our problem just had log written.. aka a common log which means it's base 10

Then why can I use the antilog button in my calculator? Antilog is basically log^-1, whereas log would be log^1.


Your calculator must be weird. I have a TI-83 graphing calculator, and the only buttons relating to logs are LOG (common log) and LN (natural log).

1/3 is rational and it goes on forever


I think there might be debate over wether numbers like 1/3 1/6 ect are irrational or rational (it might be how you do the devision)

A rational number is a ratio of two integers. Since 1 and 3 are both integers, 1/3 is a rational number.

rrational numbers are (in latents terms) numbers that go on forever, and Pi goes on forever.

Circular logic. I want to know why it has no pattern. Why are the numbers after pi what they are.

pi is just the ratio of a a circle's circumference to its diameter... its irrational the same reason the square root of 2 is

Basically it boils down to 'that is the nature of the relationship between the circumference and diameter of a circle'. Pi is merely a byproduct of relating these two things, and any attempts at understanding pi must first be based in the understanding of a perfect circle.

As far as the pattern part, it's not so much that pi has no pattern, but that it does not repeat in any way which can allow it to be accurately simplified.
