Well it was a bit of a stalemate, and if it weren't for all the hippies back home we'd have no doubt broken the communists... but we left and they won. So I'd say... no one won.
Where would the Vietnamese go if they lost? Because if we lose every war simply because we leave then we lost nearly every war. jk I think it just ended with neither side really winning. Just look at Vietnam today.
I'm generally not interested in discussing war but I'm in Nam right now and so you caught my attention.
The two sides were fighting for different reasons. US was fighting the spread of communism while the Viet-cong were fighting for unification.
Americas bombings and chemical spraying spread resentment and built the ranks of the Cong. Effectively increasing the number of those fighting on the side of Communism. For creating the opposite of what they were fighting for, US = losers.
After the US pulled out the cong spread all the way South, taking Saigon and ending the war. For achieving their goal of unification, Viet-Cong = Winner
After ending the war the Vietnamese (of both former sides) moved over the border and freed Kampuchia of the tyranny of the Khmer Rouge (the craziest crazies I've ever had the displeasure of learning about). For reclaiming their right to eat, pray, relax, see their family.. yada yada.. without being put to death, Cambodians = The real winners.
the funny thing is we started out funding the vietcong then they ran out the french but then we decided we wanted it and invaded so they used our money against us. and we still lost the war. gotta love america
It was a military conflict. Look it up. Congress never declared war. If the president didn't have so much power, the Vietnam War would never have even existed.

If I punched you in the face and called it a conflict, that still wouldn't change the fact that I punched you in the face. When you send soldiers to a country, and those soldiers fire at soldiers from the other country, and they fire back, then that's a freaking war, no matter what you want to call it.

That's like me (a minor) drinking alcohol and being arrested for DUI.

Take another look at the definition of war mentioned earlier.
Definition war: a period of hostile relations between countries, states, or factions that leads to fighting between armed forces in land, air, or sea battles.
A war is a war, even if the leader didn't use that exact word for it. There was fighting being done between countries for a period of time. It was a war.
If i remember right the united states never lost a battle in the vietnam war, and the reason we were in it was to stop the spread of communism. For the most part we were succesful. There fore I Claim Victory.
And it was a war. Just because your a mercenary in a battle doesnt make the clonflict any less of a war.

I am not denying it was a war, but I am denying the fact that Congress declared war on Vietnam.

yea kevin is right congress neve did declare war on vietnam. look it up
We never said they declared war, we just said there was a war. Which there was.
Regardless, I personally don't think any side came out of that war with more than they had. The only thing that happened was that people died in vain. My vote? They both lost. That's how war usually ends, both sides lose, one just loses a little more than the other.
War sucks, let's party. (No need to click, really, I mostly just wanted to quote the song name)
