I fail to see how time and space go hand in hand... I have not really looked into it but I was talking with my friend and I cant seem to grasp something.

How are they relative?

He said if you travel really fast in a circle for 10 years time around you would go faster.

But I fail to see how this works. I figure you would be traveling really fast for 10 years at whatever speed and when you stop it would only be 10 years around you would it not?

I mean time is just a human concept.

So lets say you are on a bus going 30 miles per hour, and you shine a flash light. Instead of the light coming from the flash light going the speed of light + 30 MPH, it still goes 299 792 458 MPS. So if it still goes the same speed then time around it has to slow down.

Ok this really got some gears turning. thank you for this but I still am confused. if light always travels the same speed how does this make time go slower? how do light speed and time really tie together?

(time doesn't flow the same speed everywhere).

But howwwwwww ahh my brain is hurting! If some guy in space is traveling for 10 minutes how is it slower than 10 minutes on earth? If they had a stop watch and both started and stopped at the exact same time how the heck would the watch in space be slower?

I really apologize for the spam I just want some answers. Why does this mean time slows down? Maybe nothing can go faster than the speed of light. Maybe speed has a limit. If there was no limit could light speed possibly be faster?

I just can't believe that time goes slower because light speed can't go above a certain speed.

age=1">Light speed no longer the limit.

Ok I mega spammed now... but I am heading to bed, hope to get some answers in the morning

PracticalManiac.

The speed of light is a constant. So no matter where you observe it, it is the same speed. So if you would be observing it at a faster speed, then time slows down so its back to the same speed. Unless you are going extremely fast, the difference is so small i don't think we can measure it.

Thanks man. I understand now but it seems a little far fetched...

I thought that was just the big bang and then it slowed down.

Actually the expansion has sped up.

Interesting, I'm going to look it up later.

Some more on Einstein's theory.

He first discovered it when he thought of a riddle, If a man going at the speed of light holding a mirror facing himself, what would he see? In case you didn't know, light is reflected off you into the mirror to create what you see, so if you were going the speed of light then it wouldn't be able to bounce off you. He pondered this for 10 years, asking some of the greatest minds of the world until he came to the conclusion, light was a constant. If you were to go the speed of light, then the speed of light will still be going the speed of light. Unlike if you were going 30 mph and something hit you at 31 mph, it would only be a 1 mph crash. So he applied light as a constant to equations other physicist came up with, and discovered the conversion formula from mass to energy, E = mc2 (c = light as a constant)

It's one of the best established concepts of modern science.

Personally, when I have trouble grasping a scientific concept, I remember that I accept the theory for the same reason I accept that evolution, germ theory and plate tectonics are true. Because a person in a white coat says so.

I would say because of the evidence that backs up said theories.

I'm not sure how einstein proved special relativity but i can guess if you send an atomic clock into space at high speeds for a year, when it comes back it will be a few seconds off.

He could not have proved this to be 100% true though...

And like I said if you had 2 similar stop watches and one was traveling at light speed and one was standing still.... Started and stopped at the exact same time... how would the times not be the same?

Yes he has. He also proved his theory of general relativity true. If none of this is true then we would never have created the atom bomb or E = mc2 so stop being ignorant and denying science, that people who know more then you probably ever will, have created.

1. Use atomic clocks. Their more accurate.
2. Read the other posts i made.

Science is my religion.
Short time ago I read an article that time maybe is only an illusion.
Actio-reactio. And humans define it as time. Maybe some oppinions about this theory?

That's like saying light is only an illusion, because it's just electromagnetic radiation that humans define as light.

I would say because of the evidence that backs up said theories.
Do you actually understand the mathematical evidence? No, you don't. You just assume scientists do and take their word for it.
