I heard about him on the news today. I don't think that a senior should be convicted of something he did so long ago. If they have evidence, I suppose he should be punished somehow, but not too harsh because he's old and may have not wanted to kill people. Maybe he could call some of the family of people he killed and apologize?
Hmm, he committed crimes against humanity but because he is old, we should let him go? Using that logic, I should have the availablty to small children when I turn 92!
he was a guard at a prison camp for the jews and was given orders along with others to help kill them, being a military man you follow orders especially when your indoctrinated to do whatever it takes to save the fatherland
He committed the crime, so he is punished. Otherwise, where do you cut it off? A year? Five years? Ten years? Twenty years? So if you kill someone, and manage to hide for long enough, you would just get off the hook? Sounds like a bad plan...
We were talking about him in school today. He's a 91 years old and its a crime he committed 66 years ago, if you send him to jail for 5 years, chance are he is going to die there. I think we should just let him go.
While I do think that this guard actually killed Jews in the death campsâ"and I am Jewishâ" I think that there is insufficient evidence to convict him of being "Ivan the Terrible," and that the court saying "he could have run away, although at substantial risk" is ridiculous and a mockery of justice. What he should do is perform community service as a speaker at a Holocaust museum.
People go to jail to learn or lesson and to stop them from doing other bad things, if you ask me they should just let him go on account of his age. Also, its not like he killed millions of people and it was a very long time ago.
Though he may not have been forced into it, he still did influence it and ran and hid. I don't think he should be put in jail or anything, he is nearly at the end of his life anyway, he should have his last few years in peace in his own home.
However I did read on CNN that he will be free pending appeal. I just want to know if this was a trial conducted by jury, or if it was one with a panel of judges.
John Demjanjuk like all Ukrainian able-bodied men were rounded up by the Nazis during World War Two and forced into slavery. Demjanjuk was forced to work as a guard at the Sobibor, Poland
That's from the article. So they found a guy, who lived in Ukraine, and forced him to shoot starving people that were running out of a cage otherwise he would be shot.
That's how it sounds to me, I don't even see why he should even be tried I'm sure many others would have done the same in order to save their own hide. This looks pointless, I'd just go with a release on the account that he was forced into it, he's old, and it's not like he killed 300 others after the war so clearly he isn't a baddie.
I can't see the page since it says blogger not found but I don't think he should get off free. Maybe be lenient but he should be punished for his crime.
