A bunch of "health experts" are trying to make it so that McDonalds can't advertise to kids aged 2 to 17.

Honestly, I don't know which is more insulting: the fact a few people want to control everyone's lives because they feel their own philosophy of right and wrong is the only right philosophy, or the fact that 17 year olds are being considered children.

So, if passed, they cannot advertise McDonalds commercials for kids, like those cartoon-ish ads with toys and such? I don't see how changing the advertising style is going to make a difference, seeing as how the parents are the ones that make the final say on whether they actually buy the food or not.

And it's not like McDonalds does not have advertisements advocating health, welfare and exercise, whether or not they are forced to.

That's stupid. People are fat in this country because they CHOOSE TO BE FAT. If you're a fatty, then you're a fatty because you're a fatty and you wanted to eat stuff that made fatty fattiness out of your fatty fat.
(All those with diseases/chronic issues are obviously excluded from this comment)

I understand that Children cannot comprehend the issues of getting fat, but I'm sure there parents have a way of making things right and teaching them what to do.

I like the promotion of health, but banning fast food is stupid. As a society, I feel we should just ignore fast food and let it die. It's good for poorer people, and it's good when you're on the run. Also, if you're an active person, it shouldn't even hurt much.

Also, McDonald's has been going really pro-healthy with their stuff and they've added a lot of options for those who fear fat. So I don't think this control is constitutional, ethically correct, or does it make sense -- because I don't think stopping adds will kill the McD Giant.

[by the way, interesting fact, I read an article saying that Subway is bigger than McDonalds now.]
Subway has more outlets!

That's just stupid. No other way to put it. If you stop the advertisements, theres always going to be ways for children to want to go somewhere. And 17 is considered children? I thought being 15 made me borderline adult. And McDonald's doesn't say they are giving out fruit, and vegeatables, and all the best things, and always thinking about the Food pyramid. No, they advertise for more people to eat their food. I just think this will fall through fairly fast.

It won't affect me very much but it will definitly affect other kids. As a kid I loved McDonalds. Their advertisments are pretty good. But I agree with Armored_Blade, we should just let it die out. I stopped eating McDonalds because afterward I never felt energized, just lazy. And I know people at least my age should be able to choose. They what McDonalds is and if they want to eat it them let them.

Generally, I believe using ANY sociotechnics (ads, marketing campaigns etc.) aimed at kids (under 15 or 14, I agree, this 17 thing is stupid) is simply unethical. Kid sees happy people eating at Mac and this is what it knows: happy people. It has not yet enough knowledge to judge.

ADULTS (or educated youth) WILL know the issues with this (fat etc.) and will be able to conciously CHOOSE what they want. Kids can't choose.
As, for Subway - aren't YOU choosing EXACTLY what will be in your sandwich in Subway?

However, Shinobody, the burden of payment almost always lies with the parents, since small children lack both transportation and funds to acquire food from McDonalds. It is also the parents' responsibility to (hopefully) know what is best for the children and give them the food that they believe is okay for them. It's no fault of the advertisements, that's for sure. If the children are getting heavier from the food they eat, should be blame the advertisements or the guardians that allow them to eat it? Let's not forget that parents have everything at their disposal to find out whether or not the food can be deemed nutritional.

Should we stop advertising toys then?

Just because they wouldn't be allowed to market themselves directly to them doesn't mean that people won't eat there with their kids. It would be almost forty years before the people that are not being advertised to would be able to make decisions for their own kids so I see it as more of a stupid ploy to defame Mickey D's rather than a viable idea to prevent obesity.

I highly suggest that everyone here watches Fat Head. It's a documentary about fast food and how it isn't nearly as bad as the media makes it out to be.

Armed_Blade, I hope that you never post anything as ignorant in these forums ever again. People don't get fat just because they say, "Hey, I'm gonna eat at McDonald's today, and tomorrow, and the next day, and so on." There are ACTUAL DISEASES that cause people to gain weight such as Hypothyroidism which lowers the metabolism, causing weight gain from the smallest amount of fat. Cushing's Syndrome causes fat gain in the upper body and face areas. Also in women, polycystic ovary syndrome which causes obesity and a loss in fertilization abilities.

I wish you had read just a little bit more of his post where he said people with diseases/chronic issues are excluded.

Back on topic, it amazes me how people think they should be able to control everyone else. If you actually want kids to stop overeating bad food you have to teach them and their parents, stopping ads is pointless and stupid.

Kids can't choose.

That's just bull****. Kids can choose just as much, even if they're 3-4. "Mommy, I don't want to eat a McDonalds!" It may not be because they know it's bad for them, but they know whether they want to eat there or not. Although at that age a kid is pretty helpless to say no if their parents want to eat there.

stopping ads is pointless and stupid.

You know, I always wondered, who even pays attention to those dumb commercials? I just walk away from the TV while the commercials are on and come back when the show returns.

They have these play areas in McDonalds with slides and rides for children. I know my young relatives like to go there just to play. It's a draw for children, like a small amusement park rather than a restaurant.
