Actually, as far as I remember, we wouldnt know until its too late. Think needle in a million haystacks.
We'd probably notice it far off. We know all the major comets that come by and other major bodies. Anything large enough for massive damage would be noted.
But there was just a meteor that passed us within a few million miles (VERY close in astronomical terms) in '08 or '09 that we were never told about because the government didn't want panic.

Nah, I once read that we can't detect all meteors heading towards us. There's also black holes to worry about, too. I would also like to state that the Mayan Calendar doesn't even end at December 21, it's just that that particular date is the end of a 5,000 year or so cycle. Historians have concluded that the Mayans didn't think that catastrophes would even happen, and most Modern day Mayans don't even believe that anything significant will happen.
And also a calendar has to end somewhere. People get lazy and stop doing things like keeping track of the future calendar.
This is not the point. The mayan calendar does not even end at that date. This has been said numerous times, for example in the post right above yours...
@dair5 (my post) But there was just a meteor that passed us within a few million miles (VERY close in astronomical terms) in '08 or '09 that we were never told about because the government didn't want panic. (your post)Well we knew about it. It just wasn't going to hit us so they didn't want to tell people. if they did there would be a panic for nothing. What makes you think they would tell us if we were in real danger? Why would they want a panic at all?

I didn't mention a date in my post so I don't see what's wrong.
water pollution and air pollution will be big problem in 2012
They will always be problems unless people start being more responsible.

The thing is that we discuss 2012 in this thread, so it's futile to even talk about ending calendars because it has nothing to do with it. Sorry if I was unclear.

Regardless, pollution does not cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.[/quote] Moreover, those are already problems, since some time already, and are independent of any world ending theories.
