This bill is nothing more than a scam for an elite few to eliminate competition so that they can make more money without increasing the quality of their services.
In the video, a man was arrested for snapping photo at a public meeting. This leads me to my next point, do you think it's about time we introduce a new amendment allowing us to document any public activity (including photos and videos)? The police should never be allowed to confiscate cameras and phones unless they are 1. on private property, and 2. in regards to requests made by the owners of said property.
There will only be around 4,000 medallions, which means 1/3 of the taxi cab drivers will become unemployed. But supporters of the bill are saying that the medallions will reward those who have been in the business longer.
Yeah, I got a question, since when was it that a taxi driver has been so prestigious a position that they must root out the "riff-raff" and present the "cream-of-the-crop" with trinkets? This will lower traffic, but it will also lower the means for people without cars to get around cities and such.

Lol! The paparazzi takes videos and photos of anyone they wish, regardless of whether it was public or private property, and regardless of whether wishes needed to be heeded. To the actual amendment, I feel as though we need to specify "ublic activity" before I'm able to make an opinion on it.
See, that's too broad of a statement though. If the amendment was as general as that, I could take pictures and videos of anyone on a public beach, which has the potential of violating right to privacy. The media had a stink with that when those new-fangled wireless telephones with cameras attached were invented and people were getting abusive with them. The amendment is too double-edged.
This will be terrible. In the recession the world is facing, taxi-ing is one of the few jobs people have turned to with guarantee to provide for their families. Taking away jobs is the worst thing to do in this climate. Taxi drivers will always be needed, so i don't really get it.
Do you think other states will take this on board?
[quote]Bureaucrats in D.C. are trying to introduce a bill that will require all taxi cab drivers to have a medallion provided by the city. There will only be around 4,000 medallions, which means 1/3 of the taxi cab drivers will become unemployed.
So since unemployment is a problem we are going to cut jobs. The wonder that is bureaucrats strikes again.

And punish the ones that are doing their job, but haven't been at it for 15 years.

That seems to be a very reasonable proposal.

I think that the vague term would be good enough as long as my next idea is implemented.

I believe that the paparazzi should be given the charges that they deserve, slander and libel. If I were to go take a picture of any of you right now, put it in a paper/on TV and accuse you of being a drug addict, psychopathic or any of the other thing that celebrities are accused of now, you could sue me for every penny I own. If the paparazzi do it and the celebrity sues, everybody jumps on the celebrity for getting upset.
The only thing that is left is general invasion of privacy. We already have laws in place for that, but they are never enforced.
I really do want to find some positive effect of this bill other than lower traffic, which won't be by much even then.
The NYC figures certainly caught my attention, over $750,000 dollars just for the ability to drive a cab!? It's literally monopolizing the business to those companies who can buy badges, because I highly doubt anyone who can come up with 750,000 needs to drive a taxi.
I don't know what to say about the arrest of the reporter, one would think that would be under the first amendment. I can't say agree with the lack of ability to confiscate cameras and camcorders. I think that in the case of the camera/camcorder having record of a crime they should be able to confiscate it. However I agree with all other points.

That's fair.

Well, I disagree. I believe cameras are like guns. We have the right to bear arms so that we may protect ourselves if the government every does anything corrupt. I feel the same can be said about cameras, and that confiscation of them is generally a way for the police to hide their abuse of power or to protect the big pigs from being exposed.
Also, there are plenty of bills like this one that already exists. Wear I live, you need a permit to become a street vendor. Of course, they are expensive and only so many are given out. Instead of going to a guy selling hotdogs or gyros on the streets, I'm being forced to go to McDonalds or some other fast food restaurant.
