I don't think the calendar actually ends. I think that's a misconception.
And, who knows; should something happen on 2012, why would the world have to end? Why not a new beginning?

It wasn't the aztecs, it was the mayans. And the calendar doesn't end, just the long count(I think thats what its called). Their calendar has several cycles and the longest one ends on Dec 21, 2012. All it means in mayan mythology is that the world will change. Its also the third or fourth time its happened according to them.
their date system was almost the same to ours. there is no end. just keep counting.
what the mayas believed is that the world will last for 13 buktan cycles since the birth of 1 of their gods called "venus". 13 buktan cycles is 13 times 144.000 days. the end of the 13th cycle is on 22 dec 2012.
In my opinion, "will last" implies a minimum, but not a maximum. It means something will endure for a time, and possibly more.
Whereas "will end" implies a maximum; a definitive end. Something will endure no more than a time.
Nor do I believe it will happen; certain events do make me suspicious though. And, I don't believe the calendar ends. In fact, that day in 2012 is just a certain galactic alignment; not the calendar ending.
Durring that time when the alleged world is supposed to end, there is going to be a solar maximum (when the sun is at its most... i guess you could say 'unstable' and the sun might send basically a giant EMP burst straight at us, knocking out power, cable, cell phones, and all that good stuff, but we're not all going to die.
Unless of course you're one of those secret killer robots the government has been hiding slowly among the general populace, then you might be in trouble...
But yeah, as has been said many times, the end of the world has been predicted so many times, and not once has it ever come true, why would this time be any different?

the world will not end. if you believe that it will end then , you will end . if you don't believe that i will end. then it will not. its up to you. but if you believe , then your faith is good.
