You may put the worlds Irony and Hippocrates on this Thread.

First.

John Stewart has Hilariously pointed out that Dr. Bachman (Michelle Bachman's husband who try's to "cure" gay people.) Is a FLAMING HOMOSEXUAL. Jerry Seinfeld is quoted saying.... "He buys Brawny paper towel for the packaging." that is IRONY AND HIPPOCRATIC.

These can be from the news and from life exp.

*don't post a story if you have not learned what irony or Hippocratic means.*

I'm always pedantic.

But they did have these feelings at some point, we're raised in a society focused on relationships, and at somepoint in the childhood everyone has said, "I like her," "I like him." those feelings then later change or don't change depending on the person's orientation. This implies on some level that there was a choice, subconscious as it may have been.

I just think of a large hippo sitting on some crates when I see it spelled like that.

Watch the movie "But i'm a cheerleader" - Shows how trying to cure gays can backfire :]

Or that one South Park episode!

That does not imply a choice was made, subconsciously or otherwise. The only choice is made when people choose to infer that a choice was made while lacking any scientific evidence whatsoever to back that assertion. This would be the same as saying that a bird chooses to build a nest in the spring or that a dog chooses to turn in a circle before laying down.

Some people never had or will have feelings of attraction to the opposite sex, it's that simple. They didn't choose to be gay, they are gay. They could choose to act like they aren't gay, but that doesn't change anything but the way they appear to others.

Very true. I don't think people choose to be gay. I for one wish i wasn't gay half the time. The reason people act like they're not gay is because of the abuse they might get due to the stereotype.

I agree with shopworn soul. It's like someone who is stright. It's not like you can choose to be stright or not. If you're a guy who likes women then you like women. If you're a guy who likes men, then you like men. Who are you hurting? Nobody. Who are you making happy? Each other. Sounds like a win win to me.

The problem with this assumption is that Catholic is not an antonym for sensible.

I never said it was, I simply said that Catholicism preaches homophobic views, although the assumption that Catholicism is an antonym for sensible wouldn't be such a crazy one.

@sprooschiken

How is that statement proof of homophobia? What they're saying is that it should not bother anyone if your orientation is different from theirs.

How the hell did you get that from what I said!?

dair said a very valid point on homosexuality, however from previous conversations I know dair is a catholic, I then said (as a sort of joke) that made him a hypocrite as the Catholic church has a rather different view on the matter.

If that's the case, then you should specify in your posts that it was a joke so that the other people who don't know won't go and defend him (like myself).

I was actually using the same tongue-in-cheek statement that you had in your post about hypocrisy and Catholics, I wasn't meaning to attack you for the comment.

I just take issue with the constant lumping of groups that happens these days, ie all Catholics are prudish evangelists, all Republicans are rich white guys and all gay people wear hot-pants with suspenders and carry pinwheels. That's the biggest problem we face in public discourse today, the immediate assumptions about the basis of a person's statement based solely upon a fractional view of who they are.

I wouldn't say it's based even upon a fractional view of who they are, but a view of what others like them are. Some homosexuals are flamboyant which means obviously all of them should be. Of course not all of them are quite as harmless, one of my friends had an exchange student from the middle east living at his neighbors house, the man wouldn't let him handle fertilizer.

That is just simple stereotyping which is even worse, in my opinion.

You weren't defending him, you just got completely the wrong end of the stick, whether I was joking or not has literally no relevance.

I wasn't stereotyping, but surely it is wise to assume that most/all Catholics follow Vatican doctrine?
