This is out standing to me. The thought that a computer chip could learn for itself and learn things without previous programming blows my mind. I would like to hear every one's responses to this!

Sounds a lot like Terminator. The fact that DARPA's funding it only helps that theory.

This is exactly like I thought would be a good way to make a computer more human like. But I think they're thinking about giving the computers too much freedom. They need to put some programing into them so they can't do whatever they want. I guess I just worry about how human they can get. What if they feel oppresed orget upset. Then they'll have freedom to hurt people. Or what if they turn sadistic?

there shouldn't be an in the middle thing like that, it's like how people used to view the african american slaves, they weren't really free and human (to them) but they weren't really pack animals

i say we either have the computers how they are today, or have another species in the workplace

Even giving it a sense of awareness could lead to problems. At what point does 'aware of physical damage' = pain? Could people be arrested in the future for abusing a robot/computer? What about giving these 'sentinent beings' weapons in the future? At what point does 'shutting down a robot' become 'taking a life'?

African American Slaves

Will the robots end up wanting their emancipation too? Perhaps aspire to becoming president some day?

if we make them self aware yet use them the same way, yes

If you're going to make computers into work like traffic then they will need restrictions. You also have to make sure that you have the power to end their life in the blink of an eye if they intentionally kill someone. This is no different then people. What I do suggest is that we make computers sentinent in contained bodies. So that they don't actually have control over entire systems and networks. So that they are even more human like and don't have a chance of trying to kill people.

i was thinking, would computers have to "grow up"? if they did would they have to go to different schools since they'd learn fast? it would be cool to have a robot computer friend

Well since it would be learning it would probably develop and start to have changing views and opinions. But I wouldn't be sure that it would go through the same phases that humans do. It would be very interesting to find out how fast they learn though. I'm pretty sure we can make their brains retain everything they are told, but I think the tricky part is apply it to opinon like we do. And maybe they wouldn't have to go to different schools. Maybe they can go to ours. Just move further depending on how fast they learn or last. I think the next step might be getting them to last as long as people.

it would be cool if what they learned first would be their personality (I.E. the first thing they saw were video games, or math problems) i would sooo hang out with the video game AI :P

I wonder how close we are to AI... this could really improve technology in the future...

We've had AI since the beginning of computers, just none that were meant to, or fully able to, simulate an actual human brain.

I would become friends with Skyrim.

But what if it got a virus and started killing people. Cough terminator cough.
But maybe they can take over things like shops or financial stuff.
Like the automated videorentshop which we have here but then with food.

less jobs for people. there are enoufg people that want to do those jobs so making robots to do that aint that good idea. making them to work on a farm or something were not much people want (are to far away from) to work but there is alot of work to do.

Another big issue I think would be things like greed. They will eventually, if they learn like humans, develop thoughts similar to human instances. If history repeats itself then computers could possibly end up like the slaves, and demand in-dependance. The only major issue with them demanding independence would be that because they are computers, and use the same processing power as Watson from jeopardy, they would have the potential to become a lot more intelligent than humans. If they were more intelligent they would take over and it would be like what we do to animals. We would be their pets and slaves.
