Half day today. Got out of High School at 12:15. Went to the middle school to say "hey" to some 8th graders, walked with my friend back home, walked to my local SUBWAY to make some lunch and collect my paycheck, hung out at my friend's house, complained about the taxes on my paycheck. Had Mom drive me to cash paycheck. Went to local Independent Game Retailer to complain some more about taxes on my paycheck. Acquired Battlefield 3, and prepared to play the game me and Highfire have been screaming about for the past half-year+.
Thirty-odd minutes in, I'm in the jet mission. I look around at the scenery, the various aircraft carriers scattered around the ocean as the Jet Fighters scramble. After a quick weapons and utilities check, my jet screams as it takes off. I am instantly greeted with this song (at the 1:00 minute mark) and burst into tears as the beauty around me breaks Your Friendly Neighborhood Satanist into a bawling baby.
The gunplay is solid, the graphics are astounding (I know graphics are unimportant in determining the quality of a game, but its worth noticing that I yelled "WHOA!" more than once playing the first four levels of this game), the multiplayer is back and the best I've played (yes Reach, you take that 2nd place spot), the Frostbite 2 engine makes the CryEngine look like the old "Wolfenstein 3D Engine", and as mentioned above, the "Dun dun dun, DAH-DUN DUN!" score brings the entire project together in a blaze of glory for DICE and EA.
Now, let me get this out of the way, since MW3 doesn't come out for 2 weeks and I don't plan on playing it 'till X-mas....
Best Engine? Yes. Best Multiplayer? Yes. Best set-pieces? Yes. Best Achievements/Trophies? Yes. Best Score? Yes.
....
CoD Killer? I think so.
-Chillz gives DICE's masterpiece a 10/10, a rating only shared in his books by two other games, Mass Effect 2 and Halo Reach.
I heard that's because it's to complicated for anyone to mod.
A poor excuse. There are very intelligent, creative modders out there, and there is little doubt to the modding community as to their ability to create something great - and for free from DICE's engine on Battlefield 3. That would be incredibly useful to the long term lasting of Battlefield 3 and the sales of the game to DICE too.
It does, my statement was about FPS's set in modern times all sharing a generic art style. Very few of them have any sort of creativity.
Graphics =/= Aesthetic ^^
Aesthetic is essentially the art style, graphics isn't really the style but the quality. If you try and ACHIEVE something with the type of graphics you have, examples being Age of Empires Online's cartoon style to maintain longevity or Battlefield 3 to have the graphics influence gameplay by a highly contrasting graphical style / aesthetic.
I do believe I mentioned this in my first post on this thread ^^
When I say it's trying to be COD I mean in terms of both gameplay and story. The gameplay gets closer to COD with each release and the story is literally a complete rip off of the MW series. Terrorist uses nuke, America(it was the SAS in MW) finds out that the nuke was sold to them by a Russian arms dealer, they search for Russian arms dealer. At least be original Dice.
and the story is literally a complete rip off of the MW series.
It appears to be Blackops, because thus far I see no Ultranationalist Russians that hate the USA after they helped them in the war in the Middle East, but rather the US still fighting in the Middle East with a guy having flashbacks over it.

That's... not really developing into full scale war because another Ultranationalist Russian decided to massacre hundreds of people who could've easily agreed with him in order to make all of them go against the USA for no apparent reason other than they deserve to die...
At least be original Dice.
They probably haven't got such flaws in it. And hey, Campaign is far from the focus - it seems like an interactive movie as far as I've seen, and really? Are you trying to hate on the story of a Multiplayer game? It's not Minecraft where you can play Singleplayer without a story, you pretty much need one for the scenarios to actually work.
The story isn't going to be that bad. A ripoff? The same way you ripoff features, where you refine them and make them work for your game is the same way DICE will be doing this, probably.

I assume you're talking about COD, not me in particular. I just want to know, what did COD rip off? All of the gameplay aspects are either part of reality or are original, the only things I could think of when you say they ripped off other is having guns in the game.

No, just games in general. I did pay reference to MMORPG's in a previous post as an example. As you can see, I've already been over this.

A perseverance in the game if I remember correctly. Not too sure though.

Not that I actually was talking about CoD, but if there is one thing I can think of that may not be true is an amount of perseverance in the game beyond statistics. Unlocks, simply put.
Again, a citation is needed as this is indirectly from master565.
I'm pretty sure Battlefield was the first FPS (or did it the best) to include an unlock system based off experience and level (though i may be confusing this with another game), and COD just did it better, so they copied Battlefield in that major respect.
It should be noted that it may not even be a ripoff. Battlefield was a huge hit so in the case that it did have unlocks before CoD and then CoD had that feature it is likely they did "rip it off". It should also be noted as an example for destructible environments was done years ago, beyond that of Bad Company. Operation Flashpoint - the first one if I remember correctly. It was done on a very... simple basis, but nonetheless the idea of it was there. Considering that game got Game of the Year and a decent amount of recognition from what I can remember, it's also possible that Battlefield replicated that idea, seriously refined it when Engines could handle it with good effects and gameplay implications without looking a bit silly and incorporated it as an experiment in their console games before moving it to a PC Focused true Battlefield sequel.
And to extend on that, TotalBiscuit in the first question of this video comments on the unlock systems - particularly FPS' and more specifically Battlefield 3. The Vehicle unlock system was his main point of cynical conflict and I kind of agree being as I know how effective the weapons / defense capabilities are, without even playing it.
Single worst flaw of BF3 Multiplayer I would think. Gunplay was exceptional in Beta, DICE hits vehicle play every time - not entirely in this case though and the combined arms warfare has always felt cohesive and effective.

Wait, that's what the BF3 campaign is about? That's pretty much the exact same thing as Bad Company 2 campaign. I understand it's a multiplayer based game, but come on DICE. -_-

Er... There's also some stuff to do with a CIA informant, Russian hostility towards America (except without good reason) and co-operation between one of the main characters and a Russian Officer.
Plus they don't try and dress up the story as this intensely complex and twisted one like Treyarch did with Black Ops. I played the Campaign thinking who the guys talking to you was, but never actually believing it since they hyped it up like the lying idiots they are. When it was revealed I was underwhelmed and exceptionally annoyed that I got ripped off. Especially when the multiplayer came into play.
Battlefield? Not dressed up, though the Campaign does suck a significant amount.
I have played BTF 3 now since the USA release, but there isn't much improvement in the new engine besides Graphics. I really can't see much difference besides Graphics if u compare Frostbite 2 to Frostbite 1.5. And it look likes you can destruct less walls and stuff.

Which has expanded the metagame. Flashlights, positions and lazer sights.

They limited what could be destroyed in Battlefield 3 which to me was a mistake although it does give an easier point of strategy ad control in parts of the map. Buildings can't be utterly destroyed which is a significant aspect in many of the maps... even necessary for the intended game style for each map.
Not too big a deal although it does feel like a step back.
I don't know if they've changed it since the beta, but those flashlights are way to bright. It's literally blinding, which looks like it will be extremely difficult to shoot people if they point it at you.
Meh. Will it deal a big blow to the CoD base? Absolutely. Will it kill the series? Not really, though I think it'll be a substantial push in its tumble off a cliff. Treyarch can't keep the series alive by itself, or if it does it'll just a succession of Black Ops with no interlude to prepare or sanity for it. IW is... Well, we all know what happened there.
I think its time to put CoD to rest, because its just not as innovative as it once was. They can get away with pumping out the same crap and make a bunch of money doing so; The downside of the Free Market.
That being said, I am in no way going to buy BF3. My two hours of interaction with the Beta were the two most frustrating hours of my life. Did I know the controls? No, but I expected that the game would tell me. Guess I set my expectations too high. The graphics are wonderful, the best I've seen for a FPS. However, that in no way should be the sole factor in purchasing a game. So what, it looks pretty and crap? But so do cheap prostitutes, and they give you AIDs. And Operation: Metro with Rush plays like a CoD game with a bunch more glitter, and no kill streaks to break the monotony. It was an attempt to bring in players from the CoD base, but I think they failed. If the game is just like CoD, then I can save 60 bucks and only buy MW3 (Which I actually don't plan on buying either). I'd have much prefered a more open map, with a more fluid game style, with vehicles. That was the big thing that I wanted to see, and I got nothing of it.
This is the moment when I run off and play Fallout 3, except that my disk is scratched. :/
