When you arbitrarily pick two heavily biased examples to generically represent two genres which are vastly diverse in aesthetic and quality, yes, I totally agree, it's really not a contest.
People need to stop generalizing about genres and realize that the style of music doesn't matter - it's the quality of the songs. You can make good songs in all genres, you can be a fantastic artist no matter what you play.
Don't like how hip hop, country, metal, rock or freaking hardcore neo-progressive classical ska-punk sounds? Blame it on your own personal preferences. It's not wrong to have a taste, but don't think you don't like something because it's bad. You just don't like it. Stop being such a narcissistic a-hole that you think when you don't like something it must somehow suck inherently.

No, I actually put some thought into it. Both songs were released around the same time and were the most successful songs for each of those groups. Pop muzik was way way more popular and successful than Saxon's And the Bands Played on. That Pop Muzik song is catchy as hell btw and I like it. No need to be an "a-hole" about it.
I actually like pop music. except for the auto-tuned junk. I like music from almost all genres. I just think that its easier to phone it in when your singing pop music than it is with rock music. I agree good music is good music regardless of genre.
Rock, for two reasons. 1.) There is actual EFFORT in making rock, proof being Van Halen's "eruption", which is pure awesomeness 2.) It's easy to make your own rock. With pop, you need all sorts of strange and odd equiptment, whereas with rock, all you need is a acoustic/electric guitar and some inspiration.

This. Anyways, it takes "effort" to make any type of art, pop music or rock. Sadly, I do believe current day pop music is all based around fame and money, it leads to commercialism. I think pop music lacks the soul classic rock holds. I tend to listen to music not to listen to it, but feel what the producer was feeling at the time.
Don't get me wrong, there's clearly a time and place for loud party music, but I just can't see myself listening to it when there's not a party like atmosphere going on.
