The U.S. population reaches 31.4 million, twice its 1840 level, with 4 million of the total foreign-born. The birth rate among whites is 41.4 per thousand, down from 55 in 1800, but the excess of births over deaths is still the main source of population growth. -Source
1860: 1,270,044,073 world population
Why did you put down the WORLD population? It was call the "CIVIL WAR" for a reason you know..
As you can see the population in AMERICA was only 31.4 million or so. The war produced about 1,030,000 casualties (3% of the population), including about 620,000 soldier deathsâ"two-thirds by disease.[172] The war accounted for roughly as many American deaths as all American deaths in other U.S. wars combined. -Source
Well I don't know much about history.. never been interested in it. But weren't most of the civilian deaths caused by bombings and famine etc?
Which is completely different to being hunted down, taken to camps and slaughtered..
Not that they aren't both terrible events but Holocaust seems worse to me.
Starvation and being a war casualty is a horrible way to die. I mean, 12 million Russian soldiers died in combat as well as 10 million Germans. Imagine a battlefield where everyone is trying to hunt you with guns, tanks, bombs or bayonets.
The Germans as well as the Allies also heavily bombed a lot of cities, causing heavy casualties. There was also the capturing of almost 3 million Soviet Prisoners of War by the Germans which were intentionally killed.
Also few notable sieges like Leningrad where 700,000 Russians were starved to death.
But the battles themselves caused huge deaths. Over 1.5 million people died for example in the Battle of Stalingrad itself.
What's horrifying about the Holocaust was the intentional genocide of a whole race, but I must say, the war clearly caused much more severe casualties.
