This topic sparked in my ehad while I was perusing the Evolutionism Vs Creationism topic.
Do believe in an after life? If so, what do you feel is in store for you? For others?
Me, I don't know and I highly doubt any spoken or written word is going to convince me. One thing that is guaranteed is it will all keep me thinking; which is healthy.
If I die and there is nothing, then that's all gravy 'cause I won't be able to think about it and be disappointed.
If I die and see St. Peter at the pearly gate with a giant book, then I'll be letting out more than a few expletives for having second guessed the Christianity I was raised to believe in.
okay well i sorta beleive in an after life like we become an animal and dont remember anything so yeah but i am not religios and dont believe in god but i think i will become either a parrot or a wolf of some kind mabye even a penguine
Why do so many people just take what they are told and never question it? Again, I am not trying to insult or peg anyone down here. I'm truly fascinated by it.
For example, Brettroks just said that heaven is in the sky. I wonder if he thinks this is metaphorical or literal.
And most of them spell with just as much thought as they put into their beliefs: None.
People seem to just be happy with accepting whatever is told to them without question. I mean, if someone told you that you just won a contest and you will receive unlimited cookies for life...but you will receive the prize sometime later on...would you really question it? You might just wait and see when it is going to happen, because you want to see if it is real.
I think it was St. Aquinas that argued for a belief in god. If you believe in god and you're right, then you go to heaven, if you're wrong then nothing happens. But if you don't, then either you go to hell or nothing happens. Is this a compelling argument to anyone?
Well, just like we've discussed before, there are definitely more scenarios than just that. What if one believes in the wrong higher being? What if the higher being doesn't even want belief in it? etc, etc, etc
All religeons focus on the higher being, so in the end you can call Him/Her/It (God can take any proper pronoun) whatever. I choose christian faith because it makes the most sense and it has historical truth.
chiliad_nodi: Not all religions center around a higher power. A set of moral standards, without involving a deity, may be considered a religion.
Asherlee: I applaud you for your very analytical questions, but asking a lot of "what" questions may not be as benefitial as asking "why". We could talk all day about who believes what and what would happen if X occured, but I think what is really important (and interesting) is WHY people believe what they do.
they believe what they do, because they were taught to believe what they do growing up. they didn't really pick they're religions, but were told what to believe by they're parents when they were young. there are some exceptions to this, but with most people thats the case.
What a sad, sad world we live in...it just might be the kind of person I am, but I could never justify believing in something only because people told me it was true and such. If hearsay is illegal in a court of law it should also be frowned upon when it come to religion.
Maybe people just are full of apathy and whatever path they are tossed upon they take it.
it may be just me but i think when i die i'll appear in a bottle and i have to wait for a mighty wizard to think wat to do with my soul, I will either be reincarnated into a cloud and after a day be telaported into imagination land and go on quest and get to choose my race.
