Proposition 8 was the bill voted on by California voters over gay marriage. The bill, if passed, would ban gay marriage and nullify over 18,000 marriages in the state. The campaign for the bill turned nasty. Both sides raised over $35 million, the most ever for a single issue bill. In the end, about 52% of the population voted for Proposition 8, thus taking away the rights of gays in California.

What shocked me the most was which group was most responsible for the bill being passed. Was is the Whites? Nope. Latinos? Nope. The Religious community? Nope. They all voted about 50/50 on the bill. In fact, almost every group voted 50/50, except for African Americans. Over 70% of African Americans voted for the bill, thus swinging the pendulum against gay rights.

I find it awfully Ironic that just 40-50 years ago, the blacks were struggling for rights in America. They had to use separate facilities, restaurants, schools, and bathrooms. They were second class citizens. âSeparate but Equalâ was the slogan to justify this racist and nasty system. It took the African American community over 100 years to tear down these walls and be granted equality. Slowly, but surely, racism is dying in America. All races are free to be in the same places as Whites. Any person of any race, color, ethnicity, background, or religion can marry whomever they want. Because of heroes like Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, W.E.B. Du Bois, and thousands of others, minority groups have gained freedom.

Now, gays are fighting the same struggle. Millions of gays around the United States are not allowed to marry the person they love. They are treated like second class citizens. They have to worry about constant threats of violence, isolation of friends and family, and condemnation of religious groups. With the state of things, the gays might as well be labeled âSeparate but Equal.â

One would think that African Americans would sympathize with the gay rights movement. Both have been held back due to genetics. Both have been oppressed. Both have suffered violence, brutality, murder, and hatred. Yet it is now the African Americans who are shooting down gay rights.

African Americans who were interviewed on the topic were seen wearing âObamaâ shirts, hats, or other gear. They supported Obama all the way. Yet when it came to gay rights, a supposed Liberal issue, they were violently opposed. Many interviewees were getting upset at the slightest thought of allowing gays to marry. When asked the difference between the Civil Rights Movement and the Gay Rights Movement, they usually responded with something like, âItâs just differentâ or âItâs not natural.â 50 years ago, it was ânot naturalâ for blacks to have rights in America. So how are gay rights any different?

There is no logic, justification, or sense in voting for Proposition 8, especially in the African American community. They went through the same oppression, and are now the oppressors. I am assuming I will be labeled a racist for writing this. That is okay. I am not a racist. I just seek the truth in the issues. And the truth is that the people who were formerly oppressed, are now the oppressors.

(NOTE: I know not all African-Americanâs voted for proposition 8, so don't think I'm blaming the entire group. I am only blaming those who voted for the bill. I also know that everyone who voted for the bill is to blame for the intolerance. But this is just to point out the hypocrisy on the African American vote).

People need to stop looking for a way to make people look "not normal". Sorry, but no one is normal in everyone's eyes. We all have different views of each other. You are not perfect and most definitely not normal. Instead of criticizing others, embrace them for being strong enough to express their differences while you keep yours bottled up. As much as you want to fit in, is it worth it to push others out?

Please stop flaming and stay on topic.

People need to stop looking for a way to make people look "not normal". Sorry, but no one is normal in everyone's eyes. We all have different views of each other. You are not perfect and most definitely not normal. Instead of criticizing others, embrace them for being strong enough to express their differences while you keep yours bottled up. As much as you want to fit in, is it worth it to push others out?

It certainly isn't worth it to push others out. Too amny people try too hard to 'fit in' and be someone they aren't. In some ways we are all to blame-'Treat other's how you want to be treated'. I don't think this 'need' to fit in will ever change. Too many people waste their lives striving for perfection when, in my opinion, it can never be reached.

It is basic human instinct to "want to fit in" so you are correct when you said it will never change. We all want to be "cool" and &quotopular". The problem is that people will go to great extents to reach that status. They feel others who go against social acceptance (different races or sexuality) should not have rights because they always want to feel better than someone else. They want to know that someone will have it worse then them. That is what is wrong with this world. We worry more about what others think of ourselves instead of worrying about how we think of others.

Bottom line, this is not a government issue, this is a RELIGIOUS issue. Marriage is traditionally between a man and a woman because marriage is a religious institution! Why should the government care? Technically all marriages to them are civil unions. If you have an issue with two men marrying, take it up with the religious authority illiterate enough to think their holy book allows it.

Marriage is defined by the government, sorry. Ever heard of a marriage license? You have to apply for one through the government before you can marry, even through a church. A huge majority of gay marriages take place in courthouses, not churches. This is in no way a religious issue, other than the fact that all the bible-thumpers seem to make it one.

Like actually i have built up a rage against them. They always find ways to make that stick up there @ss even further up... Like wtf, why should they care what others do? They themselves are the reason why there is so much discrimination through out the world. They think they are soooo much btr than everyone else. But truely everyone hates them cuz they are a bigger prick than that d0uche on american idol on steroids.... So exactly why must they think there so good? Cuz there perfect? no. Because they beleive in god? no. because they have small dics? yes. They are mean because they must be in order to protect there manly hood obviously.
(K btw, that was a joke. A rude one? maybe. But they deserve it! After all they have done to homosexuals, blacks, other religions over the many centuries of life, they deserve to be ridiculed for being the biggest d0uchebags alive. Im sure im gonna get flagged for it, but im just expressing my opinion... and what i truely beleive.)

But marriage was first only important in a religious and civil capacity. That makes it a religious issue. Its really only useful to a govenrnment for census and tax purposes wouldn't you say? In that respect, a civil union is synonymous with marriage. A recognition by the government that you want to file joint taxes. THey even use the same licensure. There is only differentiation when religion is involved.

That's not true. Depending on the state, partners cannot file for joint tax returns, despite being bound under a "civil union." One of the bigger differences that makes me mad is that if someone's partner under a civil union is in a hospital or the Emergency Room, the other partner cannot go visit, even if his/her partner is in a near-death situation.

Then again, "Separate but equal" institutions are good for minorities, right?

So for me to vote no, I think we would need to amend adoption laws. I think people who are not a male and female married couple should not be able to adopt. Because logically those are the types of people that would produce kids, and raise them in a healthy manner.


I think this is total generalization. You took the idea that two men or two women cannot be good parents to a child. I do agree that they should be married but you can't just say that homosexuals don't know how to raise a child. There are heterosexual couples who adopt and make the child's life horrible. I guess I can generalize and say all heterosexual couples suck at adopting.

My point is that not all homosexuals are the same. It is sad that people still seem to believe that. Will there be bad homosexuals? Yes, same as there will be bad heterosexuals. However, denying rights to one group is totally biased. You say you voted yes because of the adoption part but you are still voting to not allow them marriage. Even if it is not your intent, you don't want homosexuals to have rights.

I am not homosexual but I have friends who are. They have heterosexual parents so don't give me the bullcrap that only homosexual parents have homosexual kids. I also have a heterosexual friend who has homosexual parents and everyone accepts him. Are there kids who make fun of him for it? Yes, just like there are kids who make fun of others because of their weight or other insecurities. The world is mean but the reason it is mean is because we always look for someone to pick on. Women, African Americans, immigrants, homosexuals, or anyone else that dares to be different. We really need a wake up call.

You misunderstand me. I'm saying the government has no business sticking its nose into religion or your personal life as long as your actions do not pose a risk to the health of others. Gay marriage is no threat at all. They should be able to get married, straits should be able to get married, and the government should call em' all civil unions. Because to them, it is just a public recognition if union for census and tax purposes.

Again, if you have a problem with gay marriage you should take it up with the religion. Nothing like a good religious war right?

Then again, "Separate but equal" institutions are good for minorities, right?


Damn right! Only the white folk deserve good schools and refrigerated drinking fountains!
