It's November and already here in Ireland is the christmas "spirit" buzzing. But what is the meaning of christmas? it certainly isnt the fuss of how the christmas decorations look in or city centre, or what celebrity will be turning on the lights at city hall, it isnt the comercialism, or is it?

The true meaning of Christmas is the day Jesus was born(or a symbol of it since he was most likely born earlier in the year)

In retrospect, the whole idea of modern Christmas is to be with friends, family, and relatives, enjoy the day together, get in with the "Christmas spirit", and sit down over a warm fire and just be with your folks. Christians celebrate Christmas with the birth of Jesus, while doing the same above. Both of them share the idea of giving and receiving gifts.

It might be what some people look for but the birth of Jesus is why we celebrate it

Samy, you are sort of right. Christmas IS the birth of Jesus, and receiving and giving gifts to help people. People have forgotten, yes that we give gifts to celebrate and give thanks to others and Jesus, and also, that the beauty Christmas brings to the 25th of December, have you ever noticed how beautiful it is on Christmas day? Especially the stars at night, I personally love receiving presents on Christmas, but I DO still realize that I need to give something in return, to people who deserve it, AND to the person who gave me a gift.

Christmas may be beautiful where you are heros, but sadly we have very little slow, very dark clouds, no views of stars and dreadful weather.
Jesus was apparently born very near to easter, so the vatican decided to change it.

Modern day society in ireland is very unreligious within the youth community. Here the whole family thing doesnt seem important anymore. its like the actual meaning is just forgotten.

Christmas is a conglomeration of many different holidays all rolled into one. Jesus was a latecomer to the party.

If he existed at all, Jesus probably wasn't born in December.

At some point, Christians picked that date to cover up the Pagan celebrations of Yule and Winter Solstice (as they also did with many other pagan holidays).

Because I've studied religion and mythology extensively.

Christianity took over the major pagan holidays and turned them to their own purposes. Christmas and Easter are both examples of this.

If you've actually read the Bible, nowhere does it specify when Jesus was born.

In fact, the Bible is a collection of mostly recycled myths from civilizations that predated Judaism.

I'm atheist too and celebrate Christmas, because as tanstaafl28 said, the whole Christian element is quite late as far as it is concerned.

To me, it's about family and really just relishing the miracle of each others' love.
