It's November and already here in Ireland is the christmas "spirit" buzzing. But what is the meaning of christmas? it certainly isnt the fuss of how the christmas decorations look in or city centre, or what celebrity will be turning on the lights at city hall, it isnt the comercialism, or is it?

First off there is very little revealing the date when Jesus could have been born, so the December 25th date just from this is not fact.

Another thing to note are the shepherds.

Luke 2:8 (KJV)
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

Shepherds wouldn't have had their flocks out like this during the month of December. There are other clues but just from this we can tell the December date as Christs birth is bull.

From what I have gathered, christmas time is actually more tied to pagan beliefs than you might think. sure we use it to celebrate christ's birth, but he was born in the spring. the reason why we put it in december is because of the winter solstice. I'm not sure as to why, but it also explains the easter bunny and the eggs (spring means new life, rabbits and eggs symbolize fertility, we put it with christ's resurrection to make it work into the christian calendar).

The answer to this should be obvious to any Christian. Christmas is the day of birth for Jesus Christ. We celebrate his birth by exchanging gifts with one another.
