But once you're past like 14, it's not cool anymore.
Tell that to the Seniors at my High School who think its funny to write "Satin is cool" on their personal belongings and say they are atheists,so I am thinking a little older then that maybe.I realize that there is sort of a double standard in some situations, and really there are things/people on both sides that I have found have acted intolerant of the other.I typically don't say anything about it,if someone says they are atheist, but it is true that others are a bit different.Although most people of other religious beliefs in my area are typically the ones who are more quiet and only talk about religion when asked about it a majority of the time.(of course this all relates again to what I said before about what type of environment you live in and all of that)
oh um I typically don't double post to correct my self, but seeing as how I put Satin instead of Satan, that could probably be misinterpreted by people thinking that I am talking about a type of clothing material instead of the devil so whatever.
I'm partly with Moe on this one, everyone with a religion can preach and preach about spreading god's love but when someone else shares their opinion about god, and everyone shuts it out.
Quite frankly I see a little inequality here. I might get annoyed when there are people telling me I'll go to hell if I don't go to church and accept god, but when I tell them I don't think god exists, it gets ugly.
If you don't believe in God you shant worry about Hell. If you're scared about burning in Hell, in links to you believing in God. Simple. And to the topic, a belief is a belief. It's different from an opinion. No one needs to know if you're a Christian, Athiest, Jew, Rastafarian or a Pastafarian. The main reason people declare themselves Athiests is to not be included in the (small) group of Christians who spew their beliefs on the Subway stations and the nearby Library.
Oh and Ceder you didnt say you are a lutheran in 3 mins. You accomplished it in 20 seconds!
That doesn't even matter. I can say that...you know why? because this is a thread about religion. I have not said anything like that to anyone that said that they were an Atheist earlier. I respect their replies and answer accordingly. I also know that you felt threatened and probably couldn't think of anything else to say so you felt you had to try and insult me in your defense. Don't worry I forgive you. And this ISN'T JUST ABOUT ATHEISTS!!!
Also to some of the earlier posts. I think that the public looks down on Atheists because some of the modern society religions are Christianity, Jews, and Islam. It's viewed that having a religion is just an all around good thing to do. Because thoughout history religion has helped bring order to civilization. Now it is increasingly causing fights and arguments because new factions have risen. Such as Atheists or Mormons.
Religion has just been a part of people lives for thousands of years. And is seen as a normal part of the day for some.
Can a Moderator please change the name to "It's rude when people talk about their religion at inapropriate times." Or something like that?

The public looks down on Athiests the same way Athiests look down on the Christian/Main stream society. If you're an Athiest, you are disgusted by their belief of a Magical Bearded Hippy setting a blind date for 2. As a Christian you could think Athiests are the devil's minions or any deviation of the sorts.
You usually have a religion because you're born into a family with one. You are fed what the family believes in before you are thought how to reason. Athiests usually convert by their own judgment.
What REALLY amazed me was how blatantly foolish you could look while still maintaining literacy. Religion didn't bring order in our civilization. If there was no belief in a higher being, Mayans wouldn't have to sacrifice thousands of people every Moon cycle to please the gods. People wouldn't think Volcanoes were hungry for flesh. We wouldn't have conflict in the Middle East. Ect. People can have beliefs, but not at the costs of lives at maintaining status as a part of that religion.
And the most hypocritical part of your paragraph was when you blamed everything on new factions of religion. If there were no new branches, we'd all have the same opinions, beliefs, and thoughts. All there would be is orthodox Christian and Jewish.
Yeah this has never been an issue with me but if it happened I would never care even in the slightest. go ahead tell me you religion 20 seconds into a conversation, I dont care.
Acting as if you don't care makes you look out of place in this thread. If you actually didn't care you wouldn't have posted in the first place. The rest of us actually care so don't waste page space.
Not really. If he believed in Hell he would probably believe there would be away to get there. if not, he wouldn't worry about it. And if he thinks there's a way to get there, according to biblical references you sin to get in Hell. God monitors this right? Otherwise he would be Buddhist and referring to Karma which doesn't bring you to Hell or Heaven. Just Nirvana and being reborn.

Stereotyping... I don't believe in God. I'm not disgusted by religion. ERROR: INCONSISTENT DATA. I highly doubt all Christians think atheists are the devil's minions, either.

Do you have a source? I'd be interested if someone did a poll on that. I agree with you, but I'd still like to see where you got that.

What if I don't think it's cute/funny/rude when people tell you they are atheists/religious? )-=
Religion didn't bring order in our civilization.
At the start, it did... Religion may have problems, but it certainly created an order. Priests were a large part of the government, and the belief in God's smite key triggered an age of morals.
And the most hypocritical part of your paragraph was when you blamed everything on new factions of religion. If there were no new branches, we'd all have the same opinions, beliefs, and thoughts. All there would be is orthodox Christian and Jewish.
He's not blaming everything on the branches of religion. He's talking about the fights between them.
Sorry if I'm "icking on you"... People who are seemingly arrogant subconsciously beg for a counterargument.

Well actually I think it was the Roman Catholics that were the first denomination of Christianity, but I guess it doesn't really matter too much.Seriously though I do have to agree with you that it is not new factions that are in the worst conflict with each other overall, but socially it seems like they do seem like they are not viewed in the greatest light. One thing I would like to point out though about what you said though.

I don't believe he was necessarily saying they were the cause of it by themselves, but it was the fact that they don't agree with the current existing beliefs that it causes a problem which to me is pretty much the fault of both sides for not trying to understand the other sides point of view and trying to be tolerant of the other.

I'm listing the extremes, please state when in my paragraph did I state that ALL Athiests are blood sucking baby eaters and ALL Christians are Bible throwing fanatics? The person I quoted thought that everyone looked down on Athiests. Think of it as more of a sarcastically thought out paragraph.
Do you have a source? I'd be interested if someone did a poll on that. I agree with you, but I'd still like to see where you got that.
You don't need a source. If you don't know that babies haven't configured politically correct judgment by 6, I can't help you. Also, it would be a bias poll. It would either by Christian parent, a <other-religion> parent/child. There is no middle ground.

Not the least bit. If you want some parody religions join the Breakfastarians.
At the start, it did... Religion may have problems, but it certainly created an order. Priests were a large part of the government, and the belief in God's smite key triggered an age of morals.
You're mistaken. The first step to civilizations were settlements. Before that, mainly everyone migrated with the seasons. I don't think that religion was a part of that process.
Also, you're proposing that without religion, civilizations would be in turmoil. I don't think the lack of belief in Demi-Gods would mean Zeus would strike everyone with his lightning.
Priests...are those the people who made profit off people with a guilty conscience about their sins and payed them to repent to the God and then renovated their Churches? Or the other kind who were accused of raping children? Or both? Not sure.
God's smite triggered an age of paranoia and an age of believe this or you'll go to this, or at that time, death. Did I mention that Quakers and Mormons weren't allowed in the early mainstream societies of American colonies else they'd be killed?
He's not blaming everything on the branches of religion. He's talking about the fights between them.
He's not blaming it on the earlier mainstream orthodox religions. And he's certainly not giving any credit to the later. So he probably is referring to just Mormons and Atheists. Which is foolish. Please do correct if you can read his mind.
Sorry if I'm "icking on you"... People who are seemingly arrogant subconsciously beg for a counterargument.
This seems redundant. By the way, I'm as arrogant as can be. It's a lawyer's quality.
