You must be one big joke.

Ok, for the technologically deficient:

The first thing that Downadup does is:
1) Disables Windows Update. Microsoft has already sent a patch for this worm, but not everyone has it.
2) Deletes all your sysetm restore points. This way, you can't use the OS to take out the bug.
3) Disables your antivirus updates. This way, you can't get any third-party help.

Anybody that is serious enough to do all that isn't going to just pull a big April Fool's joke. This is a BIG problem, and with an estimated 9,000,000 to 15,000,000 computer bot-net, whatever's gonna happen is going to be big.

That is correct. The makers of the Conficker/Downandup worm attacked earlier this year. Another attack will commence on April the 1st.

(Those who are not careful on these matters are technologically deficient.)

I updated my windows defender just in case.
It never hurts to be safe than sorry.

My friend's math teacher mentioned it.

Wow, you guys are getting really worked up over a conspiracy theory. Are you not aware that this is in fact April Fool's Day we're referring to? The holiday is devoted completely to pranks, and who says Microsoft can't pull a few? And what makes April Fools Day of 2009 so much more significant than those of other years? I'd assume they'd try and pull a cheap joke like this in a more notable year, like 2010 or 2020, but not in some random year like 2009. Y2K was believable because it actually had some story behind it.

The point is: don't believe everything you hear on the internet! It will ruin your life if you do.

We'll just have to wait and find out. April Fools day is actually a good day to unleash a virus due to the fact that numerous people would be in disbelief. Microsoft however offers 250,000$ for information leading to the capture of the worm's creators. If this was a joke, why would news of this be all over the internet? An older version of the virus struck earlier this year and caused damage. They found out that a newer version of the Downandup/Conficker worm is programmed to strike April 1. The intent of the creator is unknown.

It depends. If the user thinks this is one big hoax then he should just do nothing at all

Personally, I'm a little afraid of this virus. My computer has no AntiVirus but Windows Defender. I really hope I don't have it. And sometimes it helps to believe stuff that happens on April Fools Day. George Gamow, Ralph Alpher, and Hans Bethe wrote a very important paper on the Big Bang, and, because it was released on April Fool's Day.

it attaches to your computer long before it does anything. You might have it so if you turn off the computer tomorrow it wont activate but as soon as you turn it on it will activate.

I'm scanning my computer like five times and I'm going to turn it off soon. Also, this is the time to do your taxes, so they might be aiming to get at information such as your social security number.
