Well, you must understand that hackers nowadays don't want you to know that they're on your system. They're in it to make money, and I wouldn't be surprised if the author of the Downadup virus sold his 9,000,000-computer bot net to the highest bidder, be it a spammer, a company, or something more devious.
Think about it:
Say that the highest bidder offered only $0.50/computer. Multiply that by 9,000,000-15,000,000 computers and you're talking about a payday of $4,500,000 to $7,500,000.
I think people will pick up normal computer problems and blame it on the Virus...
By the way...you aren't going to lose any of your files...just your security and probably all of your internet quota as the virus makes your computer ping a site a gazillion times!

Nope. Haven't you completely read everything on the worm? It can delete your files.

If you talking about me, then my supposedly "normal" computer problem could be attributed to something sinister.
Hah my friend's computer crashed today and when he booted it back up FireFox did actually ping a porno site a billion times so I don't know if this was the virus or not but he is really pissed.
Hehe.
I was lucky. I was able to solve the problem with my PC.
