Allright, so here is the background story on this....

Every day at lunch, Me and a few of my freinds have 5 minute debates. We make a topic one day, go home and reaserch it, and defend our points the next day.

So the one that was the most contravercial, was is a harpoon considered a bullet?

Now, I say Yes it is. A bullet by deffinition is a projectial shot from a gun.

So, do you tihnk I am right or wrong?

THERE IS NO RIGHT AWNSER!

Bullets are mostly shot from firearms. Firearms are usually referred to as guns. Though guns do not have to be firearms. So yes there are such things as harpoon guns but they are not firearms.

is an arrow a bullet? as far as i know it is not, i dont think your definition is correct...

A bullet by deffinition is a projectial shot from a gun.

i rather think a bullet is just that... a bullet, like a teapot is a teapot and a spoon is a spoon, it is the name given to that particular object of that particular shape and make-up! also, if you call an artillery shell a bullet, anyone in the army will have a go at you :P trust me, i did it! they arent the same, nor is a shotgun shell a bullet, nor is a harpoon.

Dictionaries say that bullets are fired from guns. We know that they obviously are referring to firearms. Dictionaries also note that bullets are propelled with explosive gunpowder. I have never seen in a dictionary that a harpoon is a bullet.

bul-let:
â"noun
1. a small metal projectile, part of a cartridge, for firing from small arms.
2. a cartridge.
3. a small ball.

Hey, look! Everything I defined a bullet as off the top of my head. So now that we have that defined, let's go on to...
pro-jec-tile:
â"noun
1. an object fired from a gun with an explosive propelling charge, such as a bullet, shell, rocket, or grenade.
2. a body projected or impelled forward, as through the air.

See? A bullet is a projectile. Like said. As is any body projected or impelled through the air. As stated by my previous posts elsewhere. Now on to..
har-poon:
-noun
1. a barbed, spearlike missile attached to a rope, and thrown by hand or shot from a gun, used for killing and capturing whales and large fish.

Oh snap! It's shot from a gun! That means it is a bullet, right?
harpoon gun:
-noun
-A small cannonlike apparatus used to fire harpoons.

So it is a small cannonlike apparatus used to fire a harpoon, eh? Let us hop over to...
can-non:
-noun
1. a mounted gun for firing heavy projectiles; a gun, howitzer, or mortar

Oh lookatthat. It shoots projectiles. And although bullets are always projectiles, projectiles are not always bullets. Just to make sure there is no more confusion:
canâ...nonâ...ball:
-noun
1. a missile, usually round and made of iron or steel, designed to be fired from a cannon.

mis·sile:
-noun
1. An object or weapon that is fired, thrown, dropped, or otherwise projected at a target; a projectile.

So a quick run down:
A harpoon is shot from a cannon and cannons shoot projectiles, not bullets.

Oh, and all definintions gathered from Dictionary.com

Any...arguments?

Your definition doesn't even exist!

here

It does not say anywhere that any object propelled by a gun is a bullet. Now a different dictionary may say it is an obect propelled by a gun, but that does not mean it's ANY projectile propelled by a gun. It simply means a bullet is propelled by a gun.

I left my computer for a few hours and found out I never hit the submit button. Devoidless beat me to the catch... and defined it better.

Devoidless pretty much destroyed the question (oh hi thar, Flite) so to sum up, just because a harpoon is a projectile doesn't mean it's a bullet. In fact it's not, because it only fulfils one of the necessary characteristics of a bullet.

I even pwned Strop! Muahaha. {Strop: I wuv you}

You totally pulled the finishing move out of your a- I mean the Star Wars Wikipedia, of all things. I totally let you win because there's no way I'm that much of a fanboy! D:

I guess this is the end of the debate. Devoidless destroyed the opposition. No ones seems to be able to effectively argue against his statement. Congratulations. Well, I am busy right now.
