A 2007 peer reviewed study by the University of East Anglia found that banning profanity in the workplace and reprimanding staff for using it could have a negative effect on morale and motivation. According to the study, while swearing in front of senior staff or customers should be seriously discouraged or banned, in other circumstances it helped foster solidarity among employees and relieved frustration, stress or other feelings.

Whats the point of salt? To add flavor to food. It's the same with cursing. If you use too much salt you ruin your food and if you curse too much you ruin your sentence.

For those of us who know some restraint, swearing is a means of conveying your anger or emphasizing a point. Sometimes I swear just to relieve some stress, dun know why it works but it does

Of course you could probably ask 20 people why they swear and get 20 different answers, some of them are pretty foolish though.

What's the whole point of using any word to represent anything? They're just words. People's hang-ups on them is a little pathetic in my opinion.

As for why bother? Well, a few studies have been done on the subject; for starters, it relieves stress.

And yeah, I remember that stuff when I was growing up too. Kids swear because they're not supposed to and they think it's wicked cool; That's about it. I find adults swear because it's just a part of the language like every other word.

I find that I use a certain word starting with F alot when I'm lost for words. A bad habbit I picked up when I met some English dudes in Germany. But anyway, I think that the large amounts of swearing is good. Because the words get used so often they lose their impact which means you have to actually use your brain to think of words for emphasis, whether it be describing something, or even something bad like insulting somebody. You still need to actually think about what's coming out of your mouth for the desired impact.

I have nothing against swearing and swear profusely myself. At the end of the day they are words and little more. There was a woman in I think the 60's in England that did loads to clean up TV (just looked her up Mary Whitehouse) but why clean up TV? if you watch a comedy programme aimed at adults chances are they will have adult themes and swear. Why complain there are warnings. Its like watching porn and complaining it contains nudity.

I love comedy and all my favourite comedians (loking at robin wiliams and Bill hicks here) swear in their acts. It adds passion and emphasises their point plus it funny

It is because of the very lack of vocabulary, that they choose to swear. However during times of extreme mental stress, we goto the simple vocabulary gives the most reaction per action. Due to the general taboo of the words, most people would choose to swear.

Another reason is immaturity, this can be seen in Catcher in the Rye, Generally children learn to swear around 12-14 and during that time they want to try out the new word, so in effect they use it a lot.

Racial slurs are just as bad.

I'd say racial slurs ae worse. The world has gotten much more liberal. You see way more swearing in the media than you ever would have 30 or more years ago. It has become more common place, yet with the phenomenon of political correctness anything construed as racist is condemned and rightly so in most cases, athough I do think PC can go too far.

As for why people swear, mostly to try to impress their peers when they are younger.

that and lack of vocabulary.

i disagree with that. I know people with extensive vocabularies (mine isn't so bad either)and those people and me still swear quite often, goddammit. It adds shock and flavor to a sentence. It adds impact.

I agree to some extent, but, there's a time and a place for profanity. People should be able to articulate their thoughts without having to swear.

No only using the lords name in vain. No were in the bible does it say 'thou shalt not say fuck'. Its only a culture that has made this word and that word bad.

I've always wondered why certain words and phrases became "bad words." For example, "Jesus Christ" just happens to be a swear word now. Why? Why not "Mohammad" or "Buddha" or "Bovines?"
