The situation is obviously very bad in that part of the world, with hundreds of attacks every year. will it require an organized effort between several nations to remove piracy from the region? after all, it is affecting internation trade on a HUGE level (pirates siezed the 3rd-largest oil tanker in the world) and has cost dozens of lives already.

Your threads kind of been dead for a while.

Anyway if there country wasn't so messed up they wouldn't become pirates I feel kind of sorry for them that they have to resort to this kind of life.

In the topic you linked, there was another post (by me no less) saying that this topic is a duplicate. Oh the irony.

Arm shipping crews. Simplest, cheapest and most effective way to deal with it. Most pirates attack in small numbers, and if ships had even a few small-arms, they'd be able to defend themselves. Instead of responding to crisis after crisis, prevent them. Warships aren't much use against fast, mobile and elusive powerboats. Besides, why dedicate so many resources when its proven to not be that effective? We get lucky sometimes and intercept pirates or free crews and ships, but luck doesn't always last.

What i found funny was that after the hostage situation when they got a whole bunch of money for the tanker, they go and sink in a storm. That's what i call instant Carma.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I think that the world at this time needs to make sure there are extended security measures on ships, including military members to protect in the case of attack. Also, a very clear plan for what the crew and passengers need to do.

um if the crew of these ships had weapons and actually shot someone pirate or not they would be subject to the laws of a foreign nation ever see Red Corner with Richard Gere yeah it'd be like that and a lot of the time the pirates are a corrupt part of the navy/coast guard and they're normally heavily armed and shooting one of them would be very hard to explain even if they were pirates and even if you do thwart an attempt to take your ship the pirates will just arm themselves better the next time they try to take a ship

Of course using the weapons would be defensive only, what other alternative is there? They persist on capturing ships and threatening hostages' lives. Put some weapons on those ships, and stand the ground. Warn them to keep away, and then fire if they persist.

The most common way they storm ships is giving defenders no choice. They approach in small dinghys with RPGs pointed at the hull. I.e. you shoot, I shoot. You may hit me, but I may hit you. I have a bigger target and a bigger weapon. Do you feel lucky punk?

meh, put a Gatling gun on the ship. Any way, the pirates use little boats, which bounce alot when hitting the waves, whereas the ship is going a lot slower and is more steady. I would rather fire from a sound ground rather than on a bouncing little boat. And to board the ship the pirates use grappling hooks. So if push comes to shove, hire right down on them.

So yeah, I am feeling lucky
