What do you believe? Do you think teaching evolution in Biology classes in high school is acceptible? Discuss the topic and your opinion, but please keep it clean.

At my high school we're taught evolution alongside the belief that the Earth was created by a diety. So I'm ok with evolution being taught in high schools.

Please don't turn this into a big argument about whether evolution is real or not. Thanks!

No problem.

@ psychomaonkey, if that's all you're going to contribute, then frankly, I don't give a flip about your opinion.

Amen. This is a discussion, you need to VALIDATE your point.

I had to learn about evolution and creationism in science class. I don't think that its wrong to learn about it either but you can't always aim creationism at Christianity, there are other gods. Anyways, teachers or kids shouldn't give there opinion and let other poeple fend for themselves and chose there own path.

Let the record show that this just isn't about Christianity! That sounded corny...

but if nobody gives them their opinion then they aren't going to know which answer to choose. opinion is just a way of letting someone know about a possible answer to a question. the answer is completely up to you.

The way in which these opinions are presented is just as important as the content of the opinions themselves. You cannot tell me that the opinions of teachers do not have an impact on how young, often impressionable, school children form their own opinions.

But in schools, teachers have a greater influence on the kids, and they will believe almost anything that comes from the mouth of a teacher they respect. Fortunately, I don't respect any of my teachers

Well my teachers that I respect affect my decision and make me think twice about things.

The proportion of people who hold theistic beliefs, whose parent(s) also held theistic beliefs is extreely high. The reason being, their parent(s) influenced their decision. A teacher, in a similar position of authority will of course have an influence, which is why beliefs should not be taught in school, only observations, backed up by empirical studies.

<Finally> sounds sort of like Social Learning theory lol. I think that beliefs should be handled very carefully when shown towards a young mind to avoid forcing something on them.

Really? I fail to see how. Teachers probably would not know a child's personal beliefs, let alone setting about reinforcing it.

that is not true, most kids actually don't care about what they're teachers think they care about what they're friends think.

I said teachers they respect. I don't care about what my teachers think because I don't respect them. But as a little kid, someone who teaches creationism or evolution to them as absolute truth might actually get to them. This was a whole seperate thing, though, not really to do with the topic.
Most of my friends disagree with what I think, so I don't really care what they think either (well, I care, but I'm not going to switch opinions).
