Here's the list of best and worst tourists. The French came in dead last. The top 10 tourists were: Japan, Britain, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Australia, Sweden, USA, Denmark.
I live in the US and I worked at a restaurant for a few months. The British seemed to be really nice, along with Indians and Arabs. There were a lot of Polish, Lithuanians, and Bosnians. Most of them were nice, but there were a few bad ones. I never dealt with a French tourist, but I have heard some horror stories with them.
So why is it that the French are the worst? Anyone ever deal with them?
In my experience working in a restaurant Australians, Brits, Canadians, and Japanese have been the most frequent, and also the nicest, tourists. We've had a few Frenchies come in now and then, and I wouldn't necessarily say they were bad...If anything it's just a typical haughtiness that comes with being French.
I'm quite surprised the British came in the top. Many in Europe seem to think of us as boozy marauding football fans. Then again, we do have frightfully good manners.
In my experience, the French are rather impatient and demanding. It's all culturally relative though.
I just know that foreigners actually tip well. Maybe it's the fact that they are on vacation and expect to spend money, whereas locals aren't prepared to lighten their wallet so easily.
For reals, brother. I went to Quebec one time...Those people are the epitome of cocky and impatient.
Try Paris. Urgh.
I also think one of the main reasons the Brits came up high is our ability to put up with almost anything. Brits almost never complain about service or cooking etc, so to restaurant staff, I guess we are ideal customers. Again, it's all down to culture. I'm sure the Japanses are nearly always very well mannered for example.
I've dealt with some... They were in town for a soccer tournament, and they literally threw food all over the place, and didn't throw away ANY of their trash. And on top of that, complained to my manager that I was the one being rude, and I didn't even go near them, except for the one that tried to hit on me. I'm not saying that's how they all act, but that's my experience with them. Oh yeah, it took an hour to clean up the dining room afterward... It's not even that big either!
I'm not really sure about the French...but personally I'm disgusted by Singaporeans. They're so snobbish, utterly devoid of any feelings except the 'Singapore-is-always-better-than-this-hellhole' feeling, with their 'oh-so-crude-' English, it just irks me.
And coming from a Singaporean, you'll know it's bad.
I personally don't like spaniards or brits. They drive me nuts at the hotel I worked at for a few months. Always coming into the lobby, asking me every single question under the sun. It's not really annoying except when they can't shut up and end up wasting 10 minutes of my time. Surprisingly, the french were the best, in my opinion. Although stand down wind. Half the ones I dealt with smelt like they hadn't washed in weeks.
I have experienced French tourists. Since my house is pretty big they thought it was a hotel! They asked us how much a 7 day stay was. Of course I said it is 200 bucks a night and you have to sleep outside in a tent. Those guys are freaking stupid.

I think it would depend on where it was... Benidorm or Majorca or something like that might have lower expectations of us since they attract more of the stereotype chav-like thing you mentioned. But as you say we do have the manners to appear respectable at times "second in dress sense only to the Italians" I wonder what kind of hotels they quizzed >.> Though overall Brits were good we were rated worst behaved by Europeans which is probably because the rest of the world get less of the idiots.
I'm surpries Germans putting towels on sun beds wasn't mentioned
Nobody talked about brazilian tourists. Thats because we dont have the money lulz!
Haha you made me laugh. Actually I was at a water park here in Florida and there were nothing but Brazilian people there. I think that there were only like 20 people t the park who spoke English.

That's probably true. I'll tell you who I don't think are too much fun though, Israeli tourists. When I was in South America two years ago, they were tons of 'em. Most had just come out of national service and were pretty darn aggressive. Definitely not the most friendly bunch of chaps.
