The United States pledge of allegiance

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands: one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

This is repeated every morning by students all over the world, and is recited at many events. However, there's one part that many people have a problem with. "One nation, under God". Why should Americans be forced to acknowledge the existence of God to pledge their allegiance to their country?

So my question to you: Should the "under God" be removed from the pledge of allegiance?

I find it funny how atheists seem to ignore that people came to America so the could be Christian without being persecuted. When ever I say that they always ignore me and a few of my other points.

JJ52 - maybe you haven't figured it out, but the constitution was kind of written with exactly that in mind. Freedom from religious persecution - that's why the U.S.A. has a (supposed to be) strict separation of church and state, so that people can practice their religion freely (or not have any religion at all).

You're making an argument as to why we *shouldn't* have god in the pledge.

Yeah I think that if god is in the pledge then it should stay that way

This country is very intertwined with Christianity.

Exactly, which is also why homosexuals aren't allowed to be married.

If you go down to Texas and say you're a Muslim, you probably won't come back in one piece; that is, if you come back at all. California, being a much more diverse place, isn't as prejudiced as the southern states; which is why I'm glad I live here instead of the south.

Oh, if I were Hindu, I'd be mad. I'd say that if God were in the pledge, it would only be fair to put Ganesha, Vishnu, Shiva, and all the other Hindu deities. After all, American Hindus say the pledge of allegiance, don't they?

It would be impossible to keep a separation of church and state. That is everyone has a belief, even atheists have a belief. And none of you have answered me saying that by your logic you will never use American money. (HiddenDistance did reply but he just said he thought it was funny that God was on money) And frankly I dont see why this thread is still going because its already been said that you dont need to say the pledge...

Sorry - glazed over that while I was skimming:

You haven't explained how or why is it 'impossible' to separate church and state. Canada does it pretty well. I can't remember the last time there was an issue with that here.

And please note - atheism is not a 'belief' it's a lack thereof.

The reason why I didn't directly answer whether or not I'd use American money... is because I don't anyway. I live in Canada mate. Besides, I can easily argue that having to use american currency that has the word 'god' on it is ridiculous and isn't a separation of church and state, and yet people are forced to use it in the same way that people are forced to stand or say the pledge of allegiance. It's a bad argument.

i do not know what hindu people say or not. do not know so many american hindus.

but you have just proven my point, in order to please any religion in state texts, speeches, laws, you simply do not base it on any kind of deity.

They probably say the regular pledge; if they included all 117 deities, it would go on for ages...

do not know so many american hindus.

That's because there aren't very many outside of California and New York. But if you lived in my area, you'd know quite a few...

National Cathedral

One more proven point that Christianity is taking over the country. Is there a National Mosque? A National Temple? A National Synagogue?

@ HiddenDistance

Its impossible to separate church and state because everyone's beliefs will effect their decision. I think that atheists have a belief that God doesnt exists, so thats why I said atheists have a belief. i also wasnt directing the money part towards you because you live in Canada, it was directed to, and ignored by, the atheists here that live in America.

I can buy a whole lot without dollars... gotta love the euro

Ya, but Im talking about in America were euros arnt used.

I still dont see why you guys keep saying that you shouldnt have to say it if you dont believe in God, when we already said that you DO NOT HAVE TO SAY THE PLEDGE IF YOU DONT WANT TO. so basically continuing this thread is pointless
