you don't get it. by robber he means someone robbing your house. you wake up to bumps downstairs, and you notice or can tell someone's broken in, what do you do? what if they have a gun? what if they hear you, and find you? you then need a gun, and have the right to shoot the robber the second you see him.
the man that you quoted said that you have to have a gun, because if the robber has a gun and you have a knife/bat/etc, you lose. you're dead. and the bad guy just got away for some time, either to not be caught or to have a police investigation at taxpayer expense.
It's in human nature to kill for something they don't have. Therefore, guns are a important use for protective and conquering purposes. Now if we could evolve past the need for violence, hate, and self gain, the world would be a much better place. But we haven't so every human civilization is going to need guns unless...

In this case what i meant by evolve is personal growth. For example, we actually learn from the past, take in consideration of others, look at all possible solutions before we act, and looking at ourselves as one group, not various civilizations and races. Those are the big factors we need to get past.

Well, Many people look at these 'seemingly' impossible ideas and either laugh, think its crazy, or never going to happen. But, it could happen if anyone made a true effort in making it happen and never gives up. Even if it seems in the tiniest of ways, that's still progress. Many ideas and solutions are out there waiting to be put in motion. All it takes is one very determined person, and it can soon turn into two, maybe even a million people seeing your idea and accepting it. Though, even if it just becomes one person to two seeing your idea and putting it in motion, its still progress. Basically all it takes is one person to set an idea in motion to get it spread.
