It's an influence. In America there are things called a Castle. A Castle is any property owned by you. Any unauthorized entry to your castle gives you full rights to shoot them, when they leave your castle, you have absolutely no rights to shoot them. Do you class yourself as a murderer after killing one whom has entered your castle?

Yeah... They are in your house... Its like if someone came over to you, stripped you down, and then wore your clothes and ran away... Its privacy and protection over anything else...
You murdered them, and therefore you are a murderer. You should not class yourself out just because you did it as an act of 'self defence', as many people call it.

If you kill someone for simply coming into your house, you'll have to argue the case that your amount of violence was proportionate to the threat level. Of course, there are multiple ways to argue that. For instance, when faced with danger, our first instinct is to save our selves. Reason is lost, and even if the person simply has a knife and you have a gun, you'll perceive them as a larger threat than they really are. Especially if they attacked you in your own home, where you expect to be safe.
The prosecution will argue against that though, saying that it's your own fault for losing your head. It's the same as in heavy traffic, you're responsible for any deaths you cause, even if the stress level is high.
To answer whether or not guns are bad: no, they're not. However, the way that many people use them is bad. One person who goes on a killing spree can ruin gun rights for everyone else.
@green - Don't write a lot... lol... I didn't read it but I think I got your general point... You don't have to shoot him/her like 30 times... just enough to stun them till the police come or fatally in the case that they are endangering your life...

Ever heard of a little place called Britain? Sale of guns is completely illegal, and owning a gun is completely illegal. I think America has a higher crime rate than Britain.
