So I didn't see a thread on this yet, but if you some how haven't heard of this yet basically schools are supposed to show a speech from Obama which is supposed to promote education and tell kids to set goals and such. Well some conservatives are calling this some sort of indoctrination from what I can tell and its sadly created a controversy.
So for a discussion do you think any of these claims have anything viable about them or are they just pointless? Do you think these claims may have gone too far possibly or not enough(for whatever reason)?
No, I'm not uninformed. That's not a direct targeting, that's saying something that we've been saying for 30 years.
What do you mean direct targeting? So far in this story there's been two sides, the administration that has said it want's to talk to children about the importance of education, and assorted conservatives who I have at this point heard say he will talk about anything health care, socializing the banks, using illegal drugs freely, and how they should all have unprotected sex, to why they should worship the devil. To me only one of those claims seem likely to occur.
By the way, can someone give me a link to his speech? And what he is going to say? No? I didn't think so.
No, there isn't anyone that can, because it's generally impossible to determine what a person other then yourself will say before they actually say it. However the Obama administration has been rather obliging most likely to the uproar here, which is why they've said they'll release a written copy of the speech on line the day before it's given, so that parents can determine for themselves if their kids should see it or not.
How do you know what he's going to say? I would have said the same thing for every address to students, until I'm proven wrong.
Neither does anyone but him and his speech writers, which is why these claims of indoctrination and brain washing are so off the wall. If the people who are writing the speech, and giving the speech are saying already that it's going to about education and the importance thereof, why does anyone have any reason to think it won't be?
You don't know what he is going to say, nor will you 'til he delivers it.
Yes we will, they're publishing it beforehand. So you can decide if you want your kids to hear it or not.
And I quote, directly from the news story in the OP...
How do you know what he is going to say though? That could just be the theme. He could easily slide in a paragraph promoting his ideals (which are flawed for the most part).

Backdoor politics is a very common theme here in America. We won't know what he is going to say. They could easily change it, or completely say something else.

Once it's published we'll have a very good idea of what he's going to say. If there's not a paragraph or two in there about why all children should vote democrat when they grow up there won't be when it's given, because that would lose a lot of votes. If you think the Obama administration is going to lie and go back on their word in such an obvious and public way then you clearly haven't been watching them since they started running. If he was ever going to try and sneak in political propaganda then that plan is long gone now due to all of this public outrage.
In short, yes they could. It would be a bad idea to. They know that it would be a bad idea to. So they won't.
At some previous comments saying he'll try and sneak in politacal ideas: Then why don't all the Democrats hide a little sentence in the 500+ health care reform bill glorifying democrats?
I dont think this is a great idea, politacally. And anyways, if Obama loses to a Republican in 2012, then the speach would just come right down. It would just be better if he gave it without having copies everywhere. You might as well put up the ten commandments right up along side it... -_-

Don't all politicians put subtle propaganda in their speeches? It's just another flaw of government. (and not just U.S. government)
My point being, you can't attack him for any subtle propaganda in his speeches, when every other political figure does the same thing. It' something we have to live with.
"As far as I am concerned, this is not civics education â" it gives the appearance of creating a cult of personality," said Oklahoma Republican state Sen. Steve Russell. "This is something you'd expect to see in North Korea or in Saddam Hussein's Iraq."
I see the republicans are trying to SCARE Americans into voting for them.

It sort of is what you would see. Not scare, but truth.
WTF is with you Stalin420? Why are you so hateful of those that live in Texas? TSL3_needed contributes a lot of useful opinions to the site on a variety of issues; his location is irrelevant, and so are your comments. You're a racist, and your mind is full of some very disturbing images and generalizations. I had a teacher from Texas in 8th grade, and there was nothing wrong with him. I didn't even know until he mentioned it once.
TLS3 is just another conservative moron who thinks the liberals are out to create a communist america.
Well, you would think that since you disagree with his political opinion. I disagree with his religious opinion, but I respect it. Besides, if he is a moron, then there are a lot of things to make fun of him about; we shouldn't go after the fact that he lives in Texas.
