So I didn't see a thread on this yet, but if you some how haven't heard of this yet basically schools are supposed to show a speech from Obama which is supposed to promote education and tell kids to set goals and such. Well some conservatives are calling this some sort of indoctrination from what I can tell and its sadly created a controversy.
So for a discussion do you think any of these claims have anything viable about them or are they just pointless? Do you think these claims may have gone too far possibly or not enough(for whatever reason)?
I was only saying if it was political; I managed to read the script for the speech yesterday so I know it wasn't. I was responding to someone who wondered why people wouldn't want to watch it if it was politcal, so I was explaining why it would be a problem hypothetically.
Ahh, ok. I thought you were applying that to this speech as well, sorry.
Nobody take this as biased opinion; I speak this as a simple kid. I'm really getting sick of these "stay in school" speeches. Day upon day, every single teacher keeps telling me I have a special quality that I must discover. Did they ever stop to think maybe I REMEMBERED what they said? So from my own perspective, and presumeably the perspective of some of my peers, it would just be plain annoying to sit through it again.
I agree, "stay in school" has become a cliche. They need to start taking a different, more open minded approach to getting us to stay in school. Most students expect adults to just say "stay in school, it will be worth it!", so they don't listen to it.
The transcript might not match what the speech actually said. Only way to know for sure is if a student or teacher filmed/recorded the speech on the TV in class that day and posts it to youtube.
PTA council president Cara Mendelsohn said Obama is "cutting out the parent" by speaking to kids during school hours. "Why can't a parent be watching this with their kid in the evening?" Mendelsohn said.
Im not for any President giving speeches directly to students during class. It would have been easier to give the speech on T.V. after school and encourage American students to watch it.
"Nobody seems to know what he's going to be talking about," Perry said. "Why didn't he spend more time talking to the local districts and superintendents, at least give them a heads-up about it?"
Yeah why be so secretive about the speech unless you are hiding something maybe? There could have been more of a heads up or at least right off the bat let people know what the speech is going to be about.

You're right, since no one ever records presidents giving speeches because no one ever cares what they have to say.
I didn't keep track word for word with a transcript, but it seemed close enough for me.

The result would be that American students wouldn't watch it. I went to a high school of around 1500 and was one of perhaps 25 who watched presidential and vice presidential debates during elections. Despite extra credit being offered in many classes. Presidents have often given speeches directly to students, and there's nothing wrong with it.

They did, they said that the speech is going to be about the importance of education when they announced it more then a week ago. Conservative groups looking to spark controversy said no you're going to indoctrinate our youth. The administration said no, we're just talking about education and will release a transcript early so that parents can decide for themselves if they want the students to see it. Then they released the transcript which was about education, and then they gave the speech, which was about education.

I was just saying that it is possible to switch it up. Not like it would have been hard to find out if they had done that. Not like they would have wanted or tried to do that either. Im just saying it was a possibility (even if almost zero percent). I figured they would not change things up and they did not. Like you said the speech is pretty much word for word (which is how any speech usually goes as compared to transcript. It will not be exactly word for word but like 99% accurate to it).

The teachers could have given the students homework, that is not extra credit but part of their actual grade, on the speech if it were given on T.V. at home. The students in class could have zoned out too.
Presidents give speeches to students all the time, but arent the Presidents who give those speeches usually invited to a university or school first. Isnt the speech usually given to a smaller group of students? Not all the students nationwide?
Im not against Presidents giving speeches to students just why during class, to students so young, and why try to give it to almost every student nationwide?

Speaking from experience, if it's not shown in class people won't watch it, even if it's an assignment. At best you'd get a lot of people lying about watching it when they had actually done something else.

The Reagen and H.W. Bush speeches were both given from high school classes, and broadcast to nearly all public school students. Presidents give lots of speeches to students where they've been invited to graduations, or are reading to children for photo ops, but it's not even remotely close to unprecedented for them to give one to all public school students.

Yeah I still dont even understand why they would did it either.

[quote]Well 90% of people perceived him as a grade-A imbecile[quote] Did you know today's information will be completely outdated in 15 years because of the rate of us developing better technology? Did you know that if you line up the entire population of china in a 5 file line the list will go on forever because of the rate of birth? Did you know that 80% of all statistics are made up on the spot? My mom had me watch it, I'm not brainwashed and I haven't tried to kill rich white people or overthrow the government and uphold marxism. I think it's a good speech.
GAHH DOUBLE POST the mods will shoot me... AND GREEN I am under 14 and I have a valid and real opinion on Obama. Several adults(including my teachers) have said that I am able to form an actual opinion of the U.S. government, also I DON'T SCREW AROUND.

Well of course, there are a lot of kids who have a political stance that they can back up, past the fact that their parents say it's the best. I'm not saying you wouldn't be able to form a valid opinion on it, just that the general kid under 12 or so wouldn't be able to.
Yeah, just kind of wondering why K-5 was part of the speech... I sort of hope whomever was there was getting interpretations from adults, though the general theme of the whole speech was to do well in school and listen to you parents... and to GET OFF DAT DANG XBOX!
well i dont think its that big of a deal but i guess many think it is because the presidents before Obama have only done this a few times. I dont think it that big of a deal but i dont really see what the point of it is. most of the kids probly didnt even really no what he was talking about. i dont see why obama thought that it would change how kids really looked at school or how they did
He spoke to people in school not to be apathetic and to actually try. Since when was that a crime? I perfectly agree with SuperzMcShort, I couldn't have put it any better.
