So I didn't see a thread on this yet, but if you some how haven't heard of this yet basically schools are supposed to show a speech from Obama which is supposed to promote education and tell kids to set goals and such. Well some conservatives are calling this some sort of indoctrination from what I can tell and its sadly created a controversy.

Here is a link to the Story:

So for a discussion do you think any of these claims have anything viable about them or are they just pointless? Do you think these claims may have gone too far possibly or not enough(for whatever reason)?

Yayz for Copierz Trollas
Lets start a countdown of how long this one can stick around for. Judging by the last few, I'd say...two weeks, maybe three

Well, all I know is that I got that paper in school and everyone is going, so I'm going too. If I was a year older than what I am last year, I would have voted for him.

And technically, it's NOT an invasion of privacy and choice if teens choose to go to his public speech. He thought about the speech weeks before actually giving it out to the nation, because we are indeed the future and must succeed as such, and so does the rest of the childrens' children.

Parents should be making the decision. If you don't want your child to see the address and your school district is going to broadcast it during school time, take your kid out of school that day. Many school districts aren't playing it at all, it is being posted on the internet as well. Parents have all of the resources in the world to prevent or allow their children to see it. It is totally unreasonable for any parent to cry about this or be upset as there are myriad ways to prevent their kids from being "tainted" by this address.

How about relating all text to the topic at hand instead of raving about conjecture, hmm? I don't think anyone around here gives two cares about what's going on between them. So leave him alone Somers.

Now then, I think that the whole decision-making thing should be to the students instead of the parents, because the speech is directed to THEM, not to the adults. It should be their decision whether to listen to what he has to say in order to do well or better in school. It may benefit their education.

And it might not.. Parents are suppose to watch over their kids it should be up to the parents.. Thats like saying it should be a child's decision if he wants to do crack or not.. i know its totally different but it should ultimately be up to the parents

Ummm...so Obama telling kids to stay in school and do well is like...crack???
Look, I don't think there should be any controversy. If parents are worried their children won't grow up to be the Republicans they're grooming them to, fine, take your kid out of seeing the President of the United States telling them to work hard in school. Politics is pure shit. I'm serious. When the fuck are they going to get around to doing something other than smearing other people and covering their own fucking asses?
In case you haven't gotten this, I'm pissed. Really, really pissed about just how fucking pointless Democracy in America has gotten. Its like a middle school argument over who did what and who's more fucking popular. Screw it.

Actually, it's not. In middle school we showed a lot more maturity and didn't immediately worry about who was popular. Kind of sad that politics sinks lower than middle school.

The part about responsibility and listening to your parents is pretty much common sense, which everyone here should already do and will do, and you will benefit from it. Like it or not, they generally know what's best for you.

Too bad I don't have an xbox, so he can't rant on me

I just finished reading the transcript, and didn't see any liberal propaganda, unlike in Reagan's speech.

I agree 100%. Politics aren't about helping the people anymore, but to see which side can bash the other more before they get out of office. This is done under the cover of "we're asking the hard questions that people want answers to". Last time I checked, questions such as "why is Obama a fascist Nazi dictator?" weren't asked before the media decided to start fear mongering. Then of course the political figures who oppose Obama can't just admit that it's not true, they have to go right along with it. Meanwhile, nothing is being done to help the people.

"Iâve talked about your parentsâ responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and get your homework done, and donât spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with that Xbox. " - from the speech

Reminds me of that thread a few months ago, saying Obama hated Xbox...

I read the entire speech, and there was absolutely no propaganda. The whole thing was just saying to stay in school, try hard, and don't give up on yourself. I'm just curious what some of the nut jobs in the media are going to come up with now about it.

I just finished reading the transcript, and didn't see any liberal propaganda, unlike in Reagan's speech.
