It was all of the news for like 4 hours. The whole country was in panic about this afternoon. Everyone thought that Falcon Heenie was trapped inside a silver dome shaped craft for more than 2 hours reaching heights around 10,000 feet in the air. It seems the kid was just hiding in the attic because he was afraid of being confronted with his father.
Actually the police are starting to think that it was staged by the parents because they were on the show Wife Swap and wanted more publicity. They first noticed this when the parents ask the kid how come he didn't answer when they were calling him he said that he thought he was on a tv show or something along those lines.
It has to be. A few hours ago they released a home video from the "Balloon Boys" family; revealing the balloon taking off and the dad getting ticked at his wife for no tying it down properly. The reason(s) I think it's a hoax: 1. It just so happens that someone was taking a video of the balloon taking off at the time of the take off? 2. In the video, you see a fairly long tether still hanging down from the balloon at the balloons take off. Therefore the dad could have pulled the balloon down and prevented it from taking off. 3. The 6 year old boy said on "Larry King Live" that is was all for a show

Well, just really little kids, everyone acts like that as a kid because they think like kids, not like teenagers or adult, and when you are afraid you don think clear.
The fact that the father called the local news station before calling 911 makes me believe he set it all up. Sure, people might see him faster, but a quick call to the police wouldn't hurt anything.
And really, the media needs something better to report on. They've been pretty desperate lately.
if your child is missing the exact first thing you should do is call the police to send out a message to the media, and if it is truly serious enough the entire media will be sending out his appearance etc.
you should not think to do ANYTHING else first, if you're truly trying to get your child back. also, if your son really runs away (even in a balloon) you should be in too much of an insane panic to even think of anything other than calling the cops first.

That's not in all cases. In Canada (not sure about the U.S.), they have to wait until a person is missing for 48 hours before they consider it an actual missing person. The amount of time should be lowered to 24 hours, but there is always a chance he got lost, went out for ice cream for 48 hours, staying with a friend, went out exploring, etc.
