At school, i recently had a arguement with a friend about what is Athieism and what is Scientology. he is under the assumption that Athieism is when you believe in evolution, and i think it is when you believe in nothing, whom (who?) is right. is scientology the belief in evolution (i call it Darwinism sometimes, when you believe in evolution that is). am i right or is he right?
Your closer to being correct. a- means without or not and theist means belief in a god or gods so an atheist is without belief in a god or gods. Scientology is some religion based off a book by a science fiction writer where god is some sort of space alien. Neither has anything to do with evolution. Also evolution is a scientific theory not a belief system so the term Darwinism would be rather incorrect to use as well.
well 1) athiesm is when you do not believe in any religion. evolution is not a religion or non-religion, it is a scientific theory (evolution is the direct definition of the Law of Succession). 2) scientology is a completely other religion, and has nothing to do with "science" as it is traditionally called. it is about aliens.

Put simply, you're totally wrong and your friend is technically right.
While atheism is not actually belief in evolution, it is indeed belief in no divine being. The name, "atheism", is a derivative. A, meaning not, theism being some sort of religion, like monotheism. Scientology, on the other hand, is very different. It was created by science fiction writer R.L. Hubbard, and is centered around the belief that the souls of aliens(called Xenus) that landed on earth long ago that died, have infected the souls of humans. Or something like that. atheism just means you dont believe in god. religions can be atheist. buddhism is just one example.

*sigh* Atheism does not mean necessarily that they are evolutionists, but almost all atheists are. How else could our planet have developed this far? But yes, I guess, if you want to get technical, atheists are not evolutionists.

But even if you call him out on a microcrap error like evolution/atheism, he still kicked your butt. Scientology is nowhere near the neighborhood of atheism.
