Want to know why I am Atheist? It's because of how the story of Jesus came to be. His story was not written down for at least 40 years; think of all the misconceptions that could have happened between that time. I mean, it is much like gossip. It works for the first few people, but then the story starts to mutate uncontrollably.

Who isn't to say that at first, Jesus was just a psychotic whom talked to his imaginary master, named god? He could have just been walking down the road talking to "god" about the basis of his life, and what he shall not do. Later, he commits euthanasia because god told him to. See how that could mutate into the modern story that it is?

What does a religion have to do with the believers? Prejudice. Stereotyping etc.

fine DE. Saying chilluns be brainwashed is as close minded as saying atheists are lazy.

Children have the most vulnerable minds in our society. Your childhood will determine the kind of person you are. Children don't know and assume that adults know everything in the world. If an adult tells them something, they believe it. They believe in Santa Claus all because their parents tell them he exists. Children are easily frightened by imaginary things as well. Remember the Boogie Man? Or the monster under our beds? Children will most certainly be afraid of a scary place with fire and scary demons. They are "frightened" into belief because at a young age they still retain their childhood fear of a place devoid of love, warmth, and familiarity.

I my statement is not closed minded. It is a fact. Your statement, however, is bigotry created by your bias and beliefs.

Come on admit that you did add a little bit of your on side. For if you open mind you can't for opinions on certain topics that mean a lot to people.
I have to agree though.

Considering a religion wouldn't exist without it's believers, I would say they have a lot to do with it.

That is one of my biggest problems with religion. People use it as a crutch because they don't have the ability to believe in themselves. They just say "god has a plan for me" or something similar and go on with what is in my mind a false sense of security.

I know some people do see it as one (and to be honest I can't vouch for them, religion is not your crutch and if you are hoping it is you will be left disappointed hating [insert name of creator here].

Then again, are you sure your interpreting it correctly? I never see my own Religion as a crutch, but acting on it as a guide or a sense of hope is always beneficial to me. I know that some atheists simply put on that they see no real benefit to thinking of something as a holy light shining on you (etc...) but I guess thats them.

Religion for me is not so much a crutch or reliance as it is something I look forward to and look for as my own guidance. If someone asks me what the F I'm going to do if everything goes wrong, I will simply leave some hope up to the blessings of my lord and hope all goes well. There really isn't much anybody can do.

If something really bad happens where I am just feeling like crap, then looking up towards my religion might give off a good vibe and one of those 'someones looking after me' feelings. I know I sound like some monk, but whatever, I think I'm getting my point across clearly enough to say that if your someone that believes in their religion well enough they will not use it as a crutch but something that can guide them. I will never say 'God has a plan for me' if someone asks what I'm going to do with my life, but if someone asks where I'll be 20 years from now and how I'll be living my life if it all goes well, I can safely say that I've no freaking idea what'll be happening but I will stick with the plan I've set for myself -- and if that is following God, then I'm sure I'm following whatever plan God has set after me. I'm a strong believer in free will -- and questioning God's ability on controlling will in a human context doesn't make much sense, so I chose to be religious and keep my will to write my destiny as is.

So, when you look at the quote
"Religion is sometimes the only thing that gets you through the day."

Then I say definitely.

Religion is different for everybody. For some people a crutch others hope, and social place. Different reasons no need to say that everybody is like that. *Reaches for the Holy Hand Grenade*

First off this is what we usually mean by false hope.

Second I don't see religion as a very good guide really. Yes it can be at times, but usually those times are things we could have come to on our own.

Without religion as a guide we wouldn't have had terrorist extremists flying planes into building. Some people guided by religion justify there hate and prejudices. Some take freedoms away from others. We had many burned alive because of a religion guiding people.

Religion for me is not so much a crutch or reliance as it is something I look forward to and look for as my own guidance.

I would call that a reliance since your relying on it for guidance.

And for other examples of that false hope we keep hearing about.

If someone asks me what the F I'm going to do if everything goes wrong, I will simply leave some hope up to the blessings of my lord and hope all goes well.

then looking up towards my religion might give off a good vibe and one of those 'someones looking after me' feelings.

Now having hope even false hope can be beneficial at times. But placing hope in something that you need to first hope exists in the first place is just working without a net.
