Look what religion does for the world. Most of it makes the world a better place. I'll use my own religion as an example, LDS. Look what it does for the world. It tells
If it isn't true? It tells you to not cheat on your wife, to be loyal. The divorce rate's wouldn't be so high, and Aid's wouldn't be that bad. It tells you to not drink beer. Don't get drunk and do stupid things, to reduce risk of drinking and driving. It tells you to not smoke, don't get cancer. Live longer. It gives money to charity, it helps people who are in need, it makes the people who need help get help. It tells you to help others when you can. Be helpful. It's a benefit to society. So what if it isn't true? Does it help society, yes? Almost all religions help society. So what if they might be false? They help everyone. So why tell people they're dumb for being in a church?
Non of those things requires a religion to do. Since we don't need religion to do those things, then what use is it? As for the use of narcotics, this can be done in a responsible manner. So simply saying "everyone don't do it" is really to much of a blanket statement that if implemented could cause more harm then good.
I guess not but if my life was in vain and there was no purpose for me many people including me would become depressed.

A person doesn't have to be dumb to be religious. I do think ignorance does often plays a roll and as such it allows stupidity to slip through the cracks at times. I also think self deceit and the deceit of others plays a roll as well.
Religion is largely set on baseless claims. With ignorance a person might fill there gaps of knowledge with those baseless claims. With self deceit they convince them self those baseless claims are true regardless of the evidence at hand. A person might know what they are saying is a lie and use that lie to get others to believe in there religion as such, deceit of others plays a roll. You can have any combination of these things as well.
Then what is the purpose? Just do whatever the hell you want and die?

As an individual I also have subjective purposes to my life that can be unique to me and me alone. For instance trying to acquire and advancement my knowledge of the world I live in is one of my purposes in life.

I said its mostly to be remembered and help the species survive, if your smart you try and further tecknolagy the strong have always attempted to be war heros or just known for being strong.

Here's the catch: We will never know the exact time that we die. When we die, we lose our memories of ever being alive because the brain and other organs shut down and cease to work.
