what should we do about the Haiti earthquake if we rebuild the slums and unstable houses then they will be leveled again. we can't send money because of corruption and foundations can only provide limited help. Do we have to completley rebuild the country?
Tomer...... This thread is certainly valid whereas the other one had an OP that was trash. The other thread is about the event and this one is about what people can actually do to help and this would be subsumed and subsequently lost within the other thread.
We should do something not because we have to but because not helping out someone in need when you are able to assist them is greed in the utmost. Keeping them from starving to death and saving those that are trapped including AMERICANS is a major thing. I personally am going to assist in a fundraiser selling baked goods and the like for donations.
Just don't send it to anything that is linked to Bill Clinton or else it will get spent on politics just like Katrina money was used to fuel his wife's bid for the Presidency.
What is the point of throwing money at a hopeless situation with corrupt leaders? Obama donated $100,000,000 to Haiti despite us being trillions in debt. Lets think about this, a hopeless 3rd world country, or us? Yeah, the money donated will help build things back up again, but what after that? Even before the earthquakes people donated money to Haiti and it seemingly did nothing except build a couple schools or something like that, you never heard about any improvement, just more requests for money. If someone really wants to do something for them, they'd take all the corrupt leaders into a field and shoot them. Then replace them with people would actually get shit done.
I've heard this argument used hundreds of times on AG, and 0 times on all the other internet combined.

Okay, what are you trying to prove here? The fact that you haven't heard it on many other forums, doesn't mean it changes the validity of the argument.
narcissan.
You could say that, or you could look at things realistically. Yeah Haiti needs help, but throwing money at the situation like what is happening now, isn't going to help much. Its much deeper than just giving stuff to Haiti, they need help with their government. If you are so valiant then why do you give your house and all your belongings to someone in Haiti.

I definitely would consider it. Its not their fault that an earthquake hit their country. So what if they're poor? They're still people. All the government is doing is giving them food, water, and shelter, all basic things needed to survive. Why not try having a heart?
I say we think; If what they consider a small earthquake destroyed their county, then imagine what a hundred small earthquakes would do to ours. We should stop laughing and making jokes, and prepare for when its our turn to be destroyed....since according to the Mya and Nostradamus its happening soon.
The Mayans never freaking said the world was going to end and 2012 is not even the correct year. If I were the next Nostradamus and said the world would end Tuesday it would not make it so. Anyone can have retroactive clairvoyance.
We should give money out of our generosity. Not us, but the people of the USA (and anyone else that cares). Its pointless for the Government to keep caring, Imo we're stuck with stupid politicians. We throw out money exceedingly for foreign affairs, practically throwing it in random directions for worthless reasons when we could, infact, target it at reducing our trade deficit and debt problems. I think its a liability for the Government for trying to help the Haitians out.
Needless to say, Haiti is a country in a poor geographic location and chances are all our cash thats going to fix the place is going to end up going no where as Hurrice Whatsitsname wrecks the place in a year or so :S They've never been a country that doesn't see natural disasters or one that has ever had money. The Earthquake has ruined the worst spot imaginable (Port-Au-Prince, the Capital, and the best economic city in the country), and in my opinion its better if normal people and lovely corporations (lol) do their best to help out.
Haiti doesn't really have much cultural background, and for the most part people I've met from the country don't want to go back, visit, and were always wanting to leave when they made enough cash to GTFO.
I donated some cash for myself, but as for the Government -- they're just being stupid. We should send our own money and help out all we can, but Obama throwing out 1 (how many zeros' were there again?) jillion dollars to Haiti doesn't make sense.
And laughing is wrong, its not cool if your just going to, as someone stated earlier "LAUGH AT TEH BLACK PPLZ LOLZ!!" Because A) It has nothing to do with their ethnicity B) Your a nub C) Your obviously a @#$#@*47#@($&@(#*$2'39742 -- You should learn to feel some sadness for the losses of others.
Haiti shares the island with the Dominican Republic. One side of the island has had all of its greenery burn in fires as fuel and the like while the other remains lush and green. See for yourself.
