Yawn, time to suggest one of my fanatical ideas...
Well, as you all know, we currently have, uhm... 12 different forums. All of them have a very good topic that allows many things to go inside (Except the Sonny 2 forum, which is special). But time to time I have wondered:
We don't have a Science Forum.
Why? I don't know. I don't think I've ever seen anyone suggest this before, for some reason. I know many people would down this suggestion with 'there are going to be no more forums' and 'there aren't enough people interested in that' (Which I frankly both disagree with), but think about it:
Many items of valuable interest (Astronomy, biology, geology, seismology etc...) are not discussed much. Why? Let me tell you why. They end up either in:
A. The Tavern
Or
B. World Events, Politics, Religion, Etc.
No offense to the many Tavern users, but it's kind of the place that doesn't belong goes to (That's sort of what it's for). Many topics are random and clearly have nothing in common with one another. Science on the other hand, is not random, and a very large, debatable forum theme.
World Events (A few Science things can land here) is to me the closest thing the Forum has to offer to a Science Forum. Many Science related threads are in there (Earthquake in Haiti is a good example) that could have an even lengthier and more depth discussion in a Science Forum (Why did the earthquake happen? How are these recorded? Can anything be done?). World Events talks about when things happen or what might happen, and many times it is a smooth discussion. A Science Forum would be a great place to debate things, take sides on conflicting theories and so forth.
So...how is this different from other forums again? Last I checked, this was going to be the exact same as all the others. You know, extra forum, most-recently-replied-to thread, most-recent threads are shown at the top? So. How would this be ANY different compared to the WEPR, the Tavern, or the AMW?
Exactly, the Science Forum doesn't need to have extra features.
He means that those three forums he listed involve intellectual conversation inside (most of them), so how would this 'science forum' be any different? This would have intelligent discussion, but he's basically debunking the other three as well.
How? I don't see how Science would 'debunk' Art, Music and Writing. Yes, those forums have intelligent conversation in them, but I don't see how a Science Forum would close these forums.
Do you really mean this Freakenstein? I mean... the Tavern has more 'random' conversations in it than intellectual if you ask me...
Sort of the idea of that forum...
Maybe it's time to make (yet) another thread about wanting to have email notifications here on AG then...
We have email notification. Just not for the forums... I don't really see that much use in it either (My opinion though).
For example, the top 5 threads (stickies not included) in it are now:
I counted 6. Which are the top 5 and which is the backup, in case one of those threads gets sick?
If random conversation threads that have no relation to science are to be made in the science section, they can just be moved to the Tavern, or wherever the appropriate section is for the selected thread.

No, the Tavern was just an example. So was AMW since I hardly see intelligent discussion there XD

I think what Shintetsu was trying to say was that Tharos, saying that:
I can't afford to become involved in important conversations without knowing when to check them and reply.
...was that this could applied to all other forums, not just the proposed Science forum. Tharos clarified it better, so he's fine for now ;-)
In addition to Science I would seriously like to see a Historical Forum come to be created. The WEPR is clogged with what could easily fill a Forum devoted to History.
So what do you think should be added to the names of the forums?
I don't get what you mean.
In addition to Science I would seriously like to see a Historical Forum come to be created. The WEPR is clogged with what could easily fill a Forum devoted to History.
True, and there should be many more forums, but then we'd clog up the forums front page as well. I see now that there are many forums missing that people want.
That makes me feel a lot better, ultimatetitan... And I wonder how you know that. I'm pretty sure quite a few of the good users would post in it. And even if this idea fails, I can see it as a sort of beacon for the hopes of other good forums.
but then we'd clog up the forums front page as well
Is you experience in foruming truly limited to just AG? Forums that are well managed have something called a SUBFORUM. Example the WEPR would be in 1 Forum with the subforums of World Events, Politics, and Religion. Then the 3 would not be meshed together but have designated areas. Private forums are nice too.
How about a homework forum? Most members of AG are still in school, so I guess it would be somewhat helpful to make a place to answer difficult homework questions.

And this is why the forums are as vague as possible so people like us can fill in those holes. WEPR (etc.) really means anything intellectual that doesn't conflict with any other forum. You can put history, science, news, every single event of the Olympics, ANYTHING that can pertain to the already-vague forum. Everything else goes to the other forums respectfully. If there is a topic you want to discuss and it doesn't fit those lines, use the Tavern!
The only reason why AG made changes to the forums is because they were TOO vague. They had the "games" forum, but this could pertain to video games and flash games alike. They started putting walkthroughs in, so they made a walkthrough forum too. Having science and history forums would be too restrictive to even be called a forum.
In addition to Science I would seriously like to see a Historical Forum come to be created. The WEPR is clogged with what could easily fill a Forum devoted to History.
So why not combine those two then? A 'History/Science Forum'? Now that's a thought... =)
True, and there should be many more forums, but then we'd clog up the forums front page as well.
They can always extend the lenght of the front page, so that wouldn't be a problem I think...

And that's why they should further clear up the forum section by providing more clear forum names where people can post their stuff! It's only a win/win situation here if you ask me!
The fron page COULD look like this if it was to be changed:
COMMUNITY
# Armor Games
-Support and Suggestions
-Newcomers Forum
Gaming
-Video Games
-Game Walkthroughs
-Flash Games
-Forum Games
-Sonny 2
# The Courtyard
-World Events, Politics, Religion, Etc.
-Popular Media
-History / Science
-Sports
-The Tavern
# The Forge
-Programming Help
-Art, Music, and Writing
Wouldn't this be a viable option to have it done?It would only mean 3 more forae to add and the problem is fixed! =D
Imagine having to scroll down 50 forums to find the one you want.
That's why they want to keep the number of forae at a minimum I guess, but still... making two more of them wouldn't be such a great deal if you ask me... it all depends on what the forum will be about and how many threads there will be made in it!
Don't forget to add philosophy there for Graham.
Oh yes! So it will be a - History / Science / Philosophy forum then! =D
This way it's even better! Always when you want to attract more people to the forum!
