Public smoking has become an issue over the past couple years and i'm here to settle this. I don't think this thread exists in this manner and if it does just let me know. Now I'm a person who hates standing somewhere and then suddenly being overcome by all this smoke in my face because the wind is blowing in my direction and someone is smoking the opposite. I absolutely hate this and "could" be harmful but that isn't the worst part, it is all that smoke in my face. Is that right to do? My grandfather said this about this topic "If your going to blow smoke in my face how about i come over there and fart in yours and see how you like it"
he has a point there, now what do you people think on this subject?

Lol. Not actually advocating it. Just pointing out the logical nonsense of discriminating against one behaviour form and not the other.

I know >_> just couldn't help it lol

Interesting demographic difference there.

Not sure it can be put down to a north-south divide and there's only a year or two between us.... I think I'm just in a strange year cos there alot of smokers at my school just not in my year lol but they're all chav scum who hang out outside school.... like their not gonna get caught >_>

Are you sugegsting we ban smoking? Then I find the starting post of Nemo is fitting for this:

A government that focuses on equality?
or
A government that focuses on freedom?

If the government bans smoking, there will be political fights. You're bringing down big business there, and many peoples' lives.

Although I must agree: Smoking is the worst for people who simply stand next to someone who does it. You shouldn't get a disease or be punished (By health-issues) by someone else.
From the point of view of someone who has Asthma I hate cigarette smoke

Can't blame you: Asthma+Smoke is not fun. You probably feel like you're drowning.
I have seen no studies which take into account cities with heavy smog, or any evidence to suggest it does any more harm to you than simply walking around an urban area and passively inhaling traffic fumes.

Today we couldn't do PE because of smog. I missed my soccer match because of it... Just because you haven't seen a study on this doesn't mean it isn't there.

Yea, both North South but also heavily ethnic on my end. Most of my school came from mediterrenean/middle eastern families. I guess it's not really surprising how many people smoked.

If you read all of my posts in this thread more carefully, you'll find that I'm actually on your side here. In any case, the part you quoted clearly shows how I am poiting out the fact that studies purportedly 'roving' the dangers of second hand smoke, ignore a much more significant factor - smog.

smog

One day I will take a fan and throw it into factory, or someone's stinking car...

Sorry for the misunderstanding. My mistake...
Like their not gonna get caught

During Health class they told us the cigar companies target poor adolescents who are not educated about the dangers of smoking (We even had a real example of machine-lungs come in). Has your school discussed the problem? It's something they should.

I don't think smoking should be allowed at schools. The secondhand smoke could well harm the other students, and it might make them want to smoke.

Why does it matter what other people do with their money? If they want to smoke they should be able to. However I do see thisisnotanalt's point, smoke can cause problems for some people and because of that should be limited to certain areas.

its a waste of money.... why would you spend all this money a WEEK for nothing?

That's why we should tax the hell out of it. Doesn't bother me if you want to pollute yourself and your family but you better pay to the rest of society.

To smokers its not for nothing. People have every right to spend money on whatever they want, it is THEIR money for a reason.

My dad died of poor health as a result of smoking, so obviously I'm biased, but I HATE cigarettes. Just gross, smelly, sickening things, bleh.

But, that's just me.

Obviously, if smoking is banned, there will be big consequences. Smoking's too big of an industry to just- *POOF* make go away. Then there will be pissed off smokers demanding rights and whatnot, it's not a particularly good idea.

Of course, there's always the obvious health benefits, that I shouldn't have to state.

I think there should be stricter smoking laws though. It'd be REALLY nice if smoking altogether would just fizzle out.

Again, totally biased, but you know.

Often when people start they either enjoy them, or want to look "cool". But after a few they become addicted and have to buy them.

Well, the whole point of smoking is, it calms you down. However, it is one of the 'bad' ways to calm down, and once you smoke a few times, you'll be taking that every time you feel the need to. It is something that requires a couple people on your side to help you get off the fishing hook.

Believe it or not, it does eventually grow on you. It's called addiction.

Err. It's actually been told that it makes you more anxious and worse tempered.
When people say we are the dominant species - we are not. Bacteria are, all the time, we are affected emotionally by bacteria, which ofcourse changes our judgements and such, smoking is quite probably the same kind of thing.

In either case, it is bad:
Economically (for a household)
Health
Emotionally (I'm more than sure of that)

I know people that smoke on parties and they only do it on parties.
They say it's like alcohol for them and they don't do it for any other reason then just enjoy the party.
I can enjoy it with alcohol only but a cigaret can do good too
