I get mad when i see Spanish subtitles on boxes or a Spanish news channel, i wonder how far is to far. I do not hate immigrants but i demand them to learn English if they come here. here are my reasons. #1. If Spanish is on a cereal box why isn't everyone language known to man, not every one speaks English or Spanish in America. #2. A country needs a dominant language to be successful and and to unite everyone in a way. #3. Language should be like currency, you should have one main one, not a bunch.
i do not think people should only know English, i encourage learning other languages, but putting multiple languages on all items can lead to problems, and possible decrease communication in the USA.
I think it's fair that if you wish to LIVE in a country that speaks a different language than your cultural background you must adopt its language and customs.
Language should not be forced, but it should be enforced. The way to do that is by going up to a non-English speaker and teaching them some English. Unless you're one of those people who likes to teach expletives to foreigners. In which case, disregard my advice.
Customs should not be forced to learn. People should have the right to stick to whatever customs they please in any country in the world, just as long as those customs don't involve hurting other people.
i think it is a requirement to learn english to become a citizen
Well, I believe there are citizenship tests you have to take in most English-speaking countries, and they're all in English, so I'd suppose that learning English would help you a lot if you want to become a citizen of an English-speaking country.
Dude, this ****ing America! The mixing pot. America is known for accepting all people no matter what ethnicity and culture they are from. Making English the only official language is incredible backwards and very KKK like.
Uhhh I think you got your definitions wrong.
The desirability of assimilation and the melting pot model is challenged by multiculturalism, which asserts that cultural differences within society are valuable and should be preserved, proposing the alternative metaphor of the salad bowl â" different cultures mix, but remain distinct.
So yeah not what you think it is.
But yes people should have the courtesy to learn the language of the country they inhabit. I don't really see why they shouldn't.
#2. A country needs a dominant language to be successful and and to unite everyone in a way.
Tell that to Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands, Russia, China, and Canada. Those countries have more than one national language, and are pretty successful.
#3. Language should be like currency, you should have one main one, not a bunch.
Huh? Your logic is dumb. Currency and language are not related.
Well, I believe there are citizenship tests you have to take in most English-speaking countries, and they're all in English, so I'd suppose that learning English would help you a lot if you want to become a citizen of an English-speaking country.
but if they are spanish speaking there is a good chance that they are from Mexico and just hopped the boarder... therefor not becoming a citizen
I think it's fair that if you wish to LIVE in a country that speaks a different language than your cultural background you must adopt its language and customs.
Guys, the world does not work like that. People come from many backgrounds, countries and are all pretty much thrown in the same pot.
How about this, an immigrant who has worked his arse off to get his family to move over seas, must now learn English right? Right, but do you think he needs to be turned away, the moment you realize he cannot? No.
Many of these so called immigrants, are in fact, the older ones of the family, who did all the work to get their younger members into the country, so that they (younger) can have a better life, and learn English. They risk it all, not so they can come off a boat and rewrite the cereal box.
back when the original immigrants were coming to america from europe they were all forced to learn english, there was no other option. today there are signs in spanish, they even have a button on ur TVs now that change the language to spanish. USA is a predominately english and it should be kept that way
^By your logic, the first European settlers in North America should have been forced to learn the ways of the Natives, and then forced to practice their rituals and ways of life, if they wanted to stay.
Which in many cases, they tried, but only to learn what was needed in order to convince the tribes to convert.
No one needs to switch the languages from English to Spanish, but, to force them to learn what you speak is arrogant.
i see why you have a problem with it, even though it does not effect you specifically. two-languaged individuals may be great at communication with the two worlds, but a person who does not understand both may indeed have problems - at least for himself.
about the cerealboxes, thats only a finacial discition, as creating one box in a large quantity, and shipping it to more countries is far cheaper that producing small quantities of several boxes. Most cereal boxes all over the world, if you research it, may show several languages: Danish boxes also have finnish, swedish, norwegian and german. German boxes have italian and french in many cases etc etc
They should have to take mandatory classes. All immigrants who want to live here for any extended period of time, and it should be that way in every country. If they have multiple national languages, they should be forced to take at least one of them.
It's their/our land, don't make it harder for them/us.
