Anyways I was hoping, that we should make all those 0AP account disappear i mean seriously, I'm on 17 AP AND I'M ALREADY IN TOP 60,000. I know there will be complaints but how about we give them a email, if they don't post in a month they go? I think it would be fair although I wanted just 1 week, but, I know people will think that is to small. Please tell me if there are any flaws in my plan.
They get deleted. People get pissed off. We tell them to make another.
Everyone wins. Accounts with 0AP aren't going to make a difference if they get deleted or not. People will just make another one if they so need to.
I'd be so pissed I'd leave AG. And so would many ghosts if they were to come back.
WHY ARE YOU RACIST TO GHOSTS?!!
Nice way to put it, Cenere. You must look like a zombie, if that's how tired you are. I'd recommend drinking a coffee next time you post on AG.
There are a bunch of people that are relatively known in the forum games, but have never posted outside of it, and some might not even have commented. I think they would be somewhat unhappy if they were told to make a new one when they are both active and known by the username.
Good way to put it: I know a few users that have incredible forum posts, and yet they have no comments or very few. Cenere himself has a pretty low comments to forum posts ratio (One I would love to achieve), but is he an inactive user? That's a rhetorical question...
If I made a guess, each profile was 10KB in size.
I can't see how it would make 10 KB: A Profile with nothing, that is completely based on the Profile page template (No changes) shouldn't take more than 1 KB (As HTML is pretty small, and you can bet all the pictures and graphics are stored only once). So your estimate would be off by a bit. Even if it were right, do you know how big 4 million kilobytes is? It's 4 gigabytes, not that much on a server (I grant it, it might be over 1% of the storage space).

What will you say when there is 4 million ghosts?

It still takes up server space to have it on record.
Remember, AG isn't Google. It's already one of the slowest sites out there.

That's your problem.
Everything builds to a climax. It might not be a problem now, but it will be. AG is growing by the day, and so is the number of users.
There are two solutions: Get more server space, or delete useless memory, like ghosts.
There aren't that many yet, and that would only take 10% of my estimate of the AG server space (Which I'm estimating at 500 GB at least). By that time we will have bigger servers, because technology will have gotten further.

Not that slow to some other sites I find... I find it pretty fast most of the time.
0AP accounts. If I remember correctly is what I said.
0 AP accounts are considered ghosts by most of us.
Nice test Graham (That's what we have you for!)
multiply by 232,726 and you get 891340.58kb or 870.45 mb of space taken up but not used.
That's far lower than what I had estimated, proving me even more that ghost accounts are annoying, but don't take up much space.
I just did a check with the Safari Web Developer to see how big my Profile was:
458 KB is a lot, but I've discovered about 430 of it come from the ads (There's some script that is 400 KB, and all the pictures take about 10 KB each.). So the Profiles are pretty compact.
But I saw how long it took to load, and that surprised me:
It shocked me, but I live pretty far away and have medium internet connection, which is a possible bias.
and more disk space you have, the more costly it is to host your website, (notice recent ad explosion?)
From what I understood there, that just explains bandwidth. And people don't load all the ghost accounts, and they are rarely visited, so they simply stay on the server and are never (Or almost never) requested by someone.
this is very interesting on how much thought and research has gone in to this descution
You can't imagine how many users have huge blisters on their hands from all the post writing they have done over time! LOL We are a discussion-eager community here! HurraH! =D
what if the accounts were erased from the website after 1 year of inactivity.
And this is one of the best suggestion this thread got.
And already suggested several times before... :P
Still.. it actually IS the best suggestion, and with that, the best solution to all the problems at hand.
But... we still have to consider the people that Cenere pointed out to us two pages back or so! The users that have an account at AG, but are only active in the Forum Games that has no AP! So they ARE active, but are not receiving any AP...
How would you explain to those users that their account will be deleted, because they simply don't make AP enough...

I lol'ed. With a forum keen on making people not care about ap, but still you have to have a huge amount to give valid points in any thread... You are not allowed to gain a huge amount of ap, because then you are are spamming. But you have to gain ap otherwise you are not active. If you only rate games, you are just doing it for the points. If you have a lot of comments, but no merits, you are spamming the games or holding large conversations in the comments... Aaah, stereotypes.
