the midwest schools use ACT scores and the coastal schools use SAT scores.
While that may be true for a few cases, most schools use both. Usually if you take the SAT, you also have to take the SAT II. And don't forget about the AP tests.
how the application system works in the US
In addition to the already mentioned tests, you have:
extra-curricular activies:
The four most important things are longetivity, originality, quantity, and accomplishments.
Colleges want people who are good at weird things. Like, if you had been dog-mushing for your entire life, that would be a huge plus.
Also, class rank is hugely important. You want to be at least in the top ten percent of your highschool (depending on where you are applying). So many AP classes are a must.
Finally, you need to be really good at writing essays. Practically every college requires an application essay. It can make or break your application.
You only have to take AP test if you take AP classes.
Actually you don't have to take the AP tests if you take the AP classes. You also don't have to take the AP class to take the AP test. I believe he's talking about the fact that AP classes can raise your GPA substantially do to the fact that an A in an AP class counts as a 5.0 rather than a 4.0.
Wait... that makes no sense. You have to take AP classes to take an AP test, but if you take an AP class you don't have to take the test. (Optional) It doesn't count as a 5.0, the GPA level fluctuates from one school to another. Some schools have the 5.0, and others have the 4.0 scale. AP test are advanced placement test, the same applies to AP classes. I am in a couple AP classes at the current moment, I know.

wrong. the tests are run by college board. they have no idea whether or not you took the class, and they will let you sign up for as many tests as you want. It is highly recommended, however that you take the class before you take the test, so you know what you're doing.

I'm pretty sure it's 5.0 for all schools. It was in all the schools in my state.

wow. thanks for clarifying that, I bet your friends think you're really smart.
I am in a couple AP classes at the current moment, I know.
Your parents must be so proud. I also took a few AP classes, But I don't rub it in people's faces.

He was saying that he knows how it works, not rubbing it in.

Your friends must think the opposite, with you insulting people for providing information someone might not have already known.
I plan to go to either SCAD at the Savannah campus or the Art Institute in Atlanta, since those are practically the only places in Georgia that have traditional animation classes. But that't three years from now. I'm still only in 9th grade, and besides, I haven't really looked into college too much, and I have no backup plan. And from the posts I've read, it looks like I'll have my work cut out for me.
He was saying that he knows how it works, not rubbing it in.
Think what you want, but I'm pretty sure he was rubbing it in. Just because he's taking AP classes, it doesn't mean he's not wrong.

so you go ahead and insult me for the same thing? ok Mr. Hypocrite. everyone who should be participating in this discussion should know what AP stands for.
The scholarships usually don't come into consideration. If you're able enough to win a scholarship, though, chances are you're pretty well-equipped for doing what you want to do.
Also, LOL at everyone trying to demonstrate their APeen. Well done, well done.
You only have to take AP test if you take AP classes.
Yes, that is true. I was just referring to the fact many schools expect you to take multiple AP tests and peform well. It's optional, but highly advisable. Also: I just got into Colby College! That sure made waiting for april 1st a lot less horrible.
