It might be us thinking its real and panicking. 2012 could be us killing eachother because we THINK it's going to happen, people would be robbing from stores, from eachother. People would go crazy and a mass panic will happen. Then battles break out, then wars break out, then nuclear wars break out, then we all die. Not because of the Mayans, or the bible, but because of our own selves.

Now since both the Mayans as well as the Chinese and many other civilizations charted their calendars by astronomy, and had extremely accurate information regarding the charting of objects through space as well as a solid mathematical understanding of celestial events, it is not a surprise that this event was foreseen by several cultures.
It is the closest explanation of the reasoning that this period seems to have a prevalent position in many early society's, however with our modern science we now know that this may not be 100% accurate, as locating the exact equator of our galaxy is difficult, as we still cannot know for certain exactly the size of our galaxy, however based on what would have been observed by much earlier civilizations it would stand to reason that their calculations would have placed the size and rotation of the galaxy on such a line to be creating this alignment on or about the solstice in 2012.

Well Earth's poles do shift I doubt it's going to happen soon though I feel that we would have some way of detecting that.

Erm the bible doesn't say anything about 2012; and like everyone else has said it's due to patterns in astronomy.

Yes it is believed by a few people. However these people have no conceptual understanding of how gravity works, especially in correlation to the electromagnetic forces, or any of the other forces at work that keep our pathetic little rock in the universe from falling apart. Which is why it's all hogwash.
