I really don't think you can compare how authentic one genre of music is to another, because within both rock and rap, there are artists who utilize computer generated instruments to make music, and most of the time, the listener might not even notice it, if its one of their favorite bands. When an established artist does this, we call it "branching out" and experimenting. When an unestablished artist does this, its easy to label this as a weak attempt at creating music, but this may not be the case. Several well-respected rap artists have experimented with full orchestras and in-house bands for sampling purposes and such, and several rock artists have attempt to incorporate electronic beats into their music, as well. Both genres have bad music and good music, it all depends on what the listener enjoys listening to.
Some rap is tolerable. Like 90's rap. Examples include Baby Got Back, Can't Touch This, and others I can't think of at the moment...but I'm more of a old school rocker anyway.
its not mindless, if it was mindless i could do it but i cant.
That pretty much sums it up, lol. I can understand why people place most genres of music in a separate category from rap, but ultimately, it takes a lot of talent to truly be able to rap well. Personally I find it hard to distinguish rap and poetry in some cases.
But rock is the best kind of music overall because it uses real instruments and the bands put much more feel in their music. Listen to Rise Against and Breaking Benjamin.
I'd like to argue that while most rap artists depend almost solely on sampling to make music, often times those samples are of real instruments, or people singing, which is a technique that many bands, even rock bands use, to create a unique sound. Perhaps the rap artists themselves did not play those instruments, but after all, most rock bands are comprised of the work of multiple people, and in that regard, rap artists are no different. Some rock bands even use techniques to amplify their music in the studio by layering over it or adding in background noises that won't be heard when the songs are performed live.
I also don't necessarily feel that rock bands put more of themselves into their music that rap artists do. Hectichermit had it right:
but the rap that talks about killing/sex/drugs
wait isn't alot of rock about the same thing
Rocks, not really about killing or sex,or bitches or hoes like rap, rock is more about love, drugs yes (i.e. the beatles, love and drugs) and deeper things like loss, rap is dumb, metal and hard rock is more about killing, and some rock may be about sex, but not really about drugs, I choose rock. The Beatles ftw.
