I noticed in the I.D. Vs Ev debate a few of us mentioned the question: Is the universe infinite or finite?

It seems only logical that the universe is finite, but shouldn't we be drifting to the center if it is finite?

because of newtons third law, i think. Objects in motion stay in motion, objects at rest stay at rest (inertia) considering we know that we are expanding, that mean we will be ever expanding because there isnt anything to stop our movement (or so we think, unless there are other universes) that means, in a way, we are infinite.

Not to sound scientifically retarded but what are we expanding into? Or how can we expand if the universe is all there is? Not that
I doubt that it's expanding I'm just curious.

The universe has a area of 1 x 1 x 1. The reason we think it's infinite is cause we're just trying to split it up into smaller measurements. It's just one thing. That's why it's called Uni, like Uni-corn, or Uni-cycle. One size. One limit. One. That's finite.

One does not mean its finite, it could be one endless entity.

to be finite, logically there must be an end or boundaries. it is harder to call something 'finitie' if we don't even know when or if it ends....

One does not mean its finite, it could be one endless entity.


Such as a line. 1=1 2=2 3=3 4=4 5=5. Infinite solutions.

That would be the First Law. I love the way you've used your imagination. Unfortunately, though, Newtonian Physics isn't entirely correct. There are certain flaws. Newtons Laws are almost always violated in every-day life (for instance, when your standing in a bus and the bus suddenly moves forward, you jerk backwards). Also, Newton's First law states that "objects" remain in uniform motion until an external force is applied on them. This certainly does not apply for the universe, since neither is there any "force" acting on it nor can we consider it to be an "object" (at least not yet).

The universe is infinite, but not because it's unlimited in spatial extent but because it's immeasurably large.
Something that is so huge that cannot be measured is infinite.

I think the Universe is infinite, but you always end at the same spot over and over again, think as it like Earth, stay on one spot, then go all around, and you'll end up at the same place.
I think the Universe always goes on forever and is infinite because you will always end up in the same place, but never live for it because it goes on forever, its like a giant Earth, - Zacton

Something that is so huge that cannot be measured is infinite.


Infinite means that something never ends, how the universe can be infinite, not because it doesnt ends but because its immeasurably large?

We should all remember that until the day we are able to endlessly float to the edge of the universe, we may not understand whether it has an ending or start, or whether is just goes in circles. Speculation is wonderful, yes, but it often starts to hurt my head.

Infinite means that something never ends

That's not the only meaning of the word infinite.
Infinite (figuratively) is also something very large.

If you think the Universe is expanding, then you have to say it's finite. That would be your answer. It's finite, but expanding.

Wouldn't this require a form of central gravity to keep you going in a circular motion though?
