I noticed in the I.D. Vs Ev debate a few of us mentioned the question: Is the universe infinite or finite?

It seems only logical that the universe is finite, but shouldn't we be drifting to the center if it is finite?

WHATS AT THE END??????

It depends from which point of the universe you consider as the start.

The Universe is shaped exactly like the Earth, if you go straight long enough you end up where you were.

I might be not getting a reference here but current models suggest a spatially flat universe.

the only way for it to be infinite is if if were still being created, which according to physics i think, matter cant be created

by human definition it is infinite. it is a relative answer to what it's being compared to. If it is compared in increments of infinity. then yes it is finite.

This is a debate even among experts it seems. When we speak of the universe we only speak of the part we can observe. There may be much more we can't. Because of it's expansion and the fact this expansion is increasing we are unable to measure the universe.

I think that it is finite even though it is a "FACT" that the universe expands its just like saying that our length and width is infinite because we grow but we all know its finite (the human body is hard to understand)

its limited. Everything dies out and the world will sometime.

Personally I believe it is finite. Simply because since we know it is expanding, it has to have an end.

I must agree that the universe is indeed finite. I can see no way in which it could be infinite.

The only answer to this is nothing:

What is outside the finity? Nothing! What is Outside the Inifinity? Nothing! How did everything start? Nothing!

I've heard that scientists believe that the universe used to be an expanding area, and that after an amount of years, it would "collaps" and shut down again. They believe we are at the half of it, so you can pretty much say the universe is at is biggest, and that it's gettting smaller again.

An other idea, would be to count up to the 10 dimensions. That, is hard stuff, but I will post 2 links.

There is also evidence that the universe will continue to grow and become cold. I think this is a more likely scenario, as I have stated due to the likely shape of the universe, the increased rate of expansion. This is also the current leading theory because of these facts.

No, If it were shrinking we wouldn't be seeing the red shift from the galaxies moving away from us.

Haven't heard from that one yet, but what did you mean, "Go cold". Just, disappear, or what?

And why wouldn't we be able to see the red shift from the galaxies moving away from us if the universe shrinks?
