I noticed in the I.D. Vs Ev debate a few of us mentioned the question: Is the universe infinite or finite?

It seems only logical that the universe is finite, but shouldn't we be drifting to the center if it is finite?

Haven't heard from that one yet, but what did you mean, "Go cold". Just, disappear, or what?

It's better known as the Big Freeze. It's basically looking at the universe as a whole as one big closed system and as a closed system the second law of thermodynamics applies. So the entropy of the universe will continue to increase and eventually reach a heat death. Of course we are a very long way off from this happening if the theory is correct.

Sorry meant to include this.

And why wouldn't we be able to see the red shift from the galaxies moving away from us if the universe shrinks?

If the universe were shrinking we would see a blue shift, the galaxies moving closer to us as the universe shrinks.

The universe must be infinite, for there is no end to empty space. If you have nothing, than what are you going to continue to have?

The amount of space around our universe is infinite, although our universe itself is finite. Thanks to our friend dark energy, the universe is expanding outwards perpetually, but most likely not regularly.
A Smithsonian magazine article on dark energy I read has some really good information on dark energy.

The universe is finite. Don't you ever learn science? The universe is expanding because of dark matter I think.

Close, it's theorized that it's dark energy increasing the rate of expansion of the universe.

Second law of Thermal Dynamics states that matter cannot be created nor destroyed. Based on this, we can assume that it has always been here, and what we have we have forever more.

Google antimatter. Also during an atomic explosion the weight of the atoms goes down.

Isn't the universe finite but like infinitely expanding?
Idk if i said that right lol.

Like i've heard the theory/metaphor that the universe is like a giant soap bubble...wait i lost my train of thought...dang it i forget where i was going with that...something with how the bubble is expanding? i forget i'm sorry haha

Have you ever though about life on other planets, that we just cant see. Saying that there isnt is crazy becasue the universe goes on forever.

The universe doesn't go on forever, although (technically speaking) there is a theory that the universe "loops" back on itself. It says that if you travel in a straight line on and on, eventually, you would arrive at the same spot because of that loop that goes in every direction.

Might be a stupid question, but is "finite" a real word?
Who knows though.

(@IcyGryphon) "Finite" is a word, as it turns out, just a lesser known one. I asked myself the same question not too long ago.

Isn't the universe finite but like infinitely expanding?

Well, yes, but not infinitely. Scientists are now saying that the universe is expanding slower and slower [url=http://map.gsfc.nasa.gov/universe/uni_expansion.html].

It's Infinite I believe. The universe never ends so some people say.

It might be infinite, but I won't call it that; I think its just ever expanding. It might stop expanding eventually.

What do you mean? I can't quite get what you're trying to say. The universe can't expand forever, eventually, the force from the Big Bang will eventually be overcome by the force of gravity.
