I somehow doubt that the Brits, with their characteristic tact and restraint, visiting Australia could pull the same off unless we imported, say, the entire body of Liverpool fans.
Haha. I think you're just lucky you're far enough away from Britain so as to be innaccessible to the British hordes of easyjet fliers. Most of them are too busy laying waste to Costa Del Sol, Zante, Magaluf etc., to bother with Australia. Trust me, although I'd love to perpetuate the gentlemanly stereotype of the British, it's quite plain to anyone who's experienced the real Britain, that we're not as thoughtful as films like Withnail and I would make out.
Always tryin' to keep a ****** down!
Amen brother.
You lost all chances of "compassion on disadvantaged grounds" when you mentioned this. The white guy has it pretty tough nowadays lol.
You know, there are so many scholarships out there, you really can't complain. If you work hard and get a decent GPA and SAT/ACT score, you'll probably get a scholarship regardless of race. Additionally, many schools out there will pay 100 percent of demonstrated need, so even if you don't get a scholarship, you have nothing to worry about.
Sure, there are more scholarships for minorities than there are for white people. So you'll probably have to write a few essays instead of having money just handed to you.
The only scholarship my school offers to freshmen has nothing to do with race, it's just given to the top 30 applicants (which includes myself). And then, on top of that, they replace all of their loans with grants (again, not based in race). So find out what types of scholarships your school offers, and then behave accordingly.
I don't really get this compartmentalised racial talk coming from Americans. I'm not sure whether you'd view the "opportunity based" bursaries in the US as a form of positive discrimination. In Australia, the only thing I can think of are the two demographic types of scholarhip:
a) Aboriginal or Torres-Strait Islander b) Rural Access Scheme
The former is to do with a long and complicated Australian history, so I won't explore that in detail here. The latter is due to an identified lack of opportunities for those seeking higher education who live in remote areas. Apart from that, the only scholarships given to specific ethnic groups are incidental and due to some kind of international student exchange scheme in which all the recipients are of a certain ethnicity e.g. most of my Malaysian classmates, who are Malay.
Otherwise scholarships are based on either merit or needs... the more it is based on merit the less it is about race! As racial as our talk gets is noticing the trends in student demographics themselves: most undergraduate medical students are Asian and Indian, whereas most postgraduate-entry medical students are Caucasian!
How did this go from College, to racial profiling, to white supremacy?
O_o
Anyways. I graduate in 5 days
I have two scholarships that I received and haven't decided which to choose from yet. The first is a 2 year tuition free scholarship to the Art Institute. And the other a $5,000 grant from Nordstrom to the University of Washington for Marine Biology & Oceanography.
